What is that? If I got that question once, I got it 100 times. Sure to draw a crowd wherever it goes and I can testify to that! This is a VW based kit car from Kelmark Engineering. Based out of Okemos Michigan and began doing business in 1969. Mostly converting rear engine cars to V8 powered ones. Most notably, Corvairs. Kelmark Corvairs are highly regarded in the collector circles today. Starting around 1974 they introduced their own car. A fiberglass bodied car using a VW chassis and loosely based on the Ferrari Dino and a Corvette prototype from 1969. The end result was an outstanding accomplishment. Most would never know this was not a regular production automobile. This particular car was built by Kelmark in 1977 (See Certificate Of Origin in the picture gallery.) and used a 1970 VW chassis (The car is registered as a 1970 VW).Somewhere along the line the car was restored and painted this STUNNING solar yellow with deep purple striping. Possibly used as a PPG advertising car but we cannot confirm that. The paint work on the car was second to none. Just outstanding. The interior is cozy to say the least. NOTE - If you are much taller than 5'10" you'll want to stop reading now. This car is NOT for you. Comfortable for the right person with vinyl covered racing style seats for both passengers. Nice analog gauges that all function properly with the exception of the fuel gauge that reads inaccurately. A possible sending unit issue which is easily accessible from the 'trunk'. Here's the best part. The car is AIR CONDITIONED! Yes, a complete and working Vintage Air kit was installed and hooked up very recently at a very high cost. I doubt you'll find another one with a/c.Mechanically the car is equipped with a circa 1973 Porsche 914 2.0 engine. The top side of the engine has been completely rebuilt. A very strong running car. Sounds like a Le Mans racer. Good clutch. Shifts well through the gears and drives as expected. Not without some faults, they are minor but to be noted for full disclosure...- Although the doors are made to be lockable, the locks do not operate on this car.- Gas gauge not accurate. Reads 1/4 when indeed it's full.- Right directional signal sometimes is faulty.- Brake lights intermittently don't operate.- Extremely small fiberglass cracks which are shown in the gallery of pics and to be expected from a 45 year old fiberglass body. Again, they are SUPER minor. It's been said that only a couple dozen or so of these remain in existence. We can't confirm that but what we can almost guarantee if that this is one of the finest examples out there. If you are in the market for a high grade kit car or always yearned for a Ferrari Dino but couldn't afford one, this is about as close and you can get and for an absolute bargain!Check out the gallery of photos and watch my YouTube walk around video by searching 'Orphan Car Garage' on YouTube. Honestly, pictures and videos don't do it justice.
