1924 Studebaker Special Six Depression Era Truck Conversion with Amazing Patina!

Built in December of 1923 as a 1924model year Special Six touring body, this well preserved Studebaker is a fabulous example of a still running truck conversion performed on many luxury vehicles in the Great Depression. The Special six was a mid level luxury model first introduced in 1918 and produced until1927 when it was replaced with the Commander. A touring body is a 4door convertible. The original body was metal over wood framing. The Studebaker Sixes were fairly powerful large cars during the 1920's. While not popular as racing automobiles, they appeared often as Police cars.

As the Roaring Twenties drew to a close, the Great Depression heated up. Many expensive cars ended up being tossed aside in favor of more fuel efficient cars. Farmers and mechanics snatched up many of these big cars to convert into trucks. The powerful engines and large chassis made ideal for the job. This particular car made its way to a blueberry farm in New Jersey. It would live on this blueberry farm for over 60 years! At some point the rear body was discarded in favor of a wooden truck bed. The truck bed appears to be from extremely old wagon. Most of the brackets appear to be mad from iron. The wood in the bed seems to be old growth lumber that is very wide, the wood you might see in an 1800s farm house instead of Home Depot. Some of the planks are over 20 inches wide! The truck cab is very nicely built. It is skinned with vinyl canvass of some sort over wood.

The engine has been made to run after years stored inside of a garage. Thee engine does drip from several spots as you would expect from any century old automobile. It has a vacuum fuel pump that is in working condition. Occasionally the starter clutch acts up and needs to be oiled, when this happens you have to turn the engine over by hand and oil all four ports on the starter clutch. It may eventually need to be replaced. The hand cranks present if you are feeling adventurous when starting. I have used it several times and it usually fires up first try if it has been primed. This Studebaker does go forward, reverse and stops in the yard. It is not currently street drive-able. YOU WILL NEED TO TOWTHIS HOME. The lights are not working now, they did work about 6years ago the last time it ran. Some of the tires have been replaced with very old NOS Michelin but not all. Several extra tires are included. The fuel tank is a newer one. The original tank was not present when my family acquired it. The cab is nicely made of wood with a vinyl top. The original convertible windshield was retained. It is unknown when the cab was built. There appears to be a spot that was taped back down on the vinyl top. The passenger door has been re-skinned poorly in galvanized steel. The latch and hinges on that side are not original at all. The paint is flaky and chipped all over but it gives an incredible rustic charm to the truck.
