Description:

1979 Porsche 928

For sale is a 1979 Porsche 928 five-speed. The car at some point in its life had the original engine swapped for a Chevy small-block v-8 with tuned port injection (Corvette late 80’s early 90’s). The conversion came from Renegade Hybrids in Las Vegas. The car runs well, and weather permitting I drive it every day to and from work, both city and highway about twenty miles each way. I have owned the car about five years, and have kept itgaraged when not driving (as I’m sure have the other owners, given the shape of the exterior). It has just under 131,000 miles on it.

The good (what works or has been fixed):

  • The car looks great and runs well. Very smooth on the highway.
  • The glass panels are in great shape and the rear and side windows between the B- and C-pillars are tinted.
  • All of the car’s lights, including the pop-up headlights, are in fine shape.
  • All body panels are straight and are in good shape.
  • The car has new tires - Pirelli 225/50r16, 245/45r16 surrounding slotted and chromed factory aluminum wheels.
  • The marron (brown) (code 40A) seats are in decent shape with some visible wear.
  • The matching carpet is in good shape.
  • The matching headliner, dashboard (see comments below), steering wheel, door panels, mirrors, and center console are all in good shape. I replaced the original shifter with a short-shifter, and installed a new shifter knob and skirt.
  • In the dash is a Blaupunkt AM/FM stereo with CD changer mounted underneath the dash. It works, but it’s old and in all honesty doesn’t sound that great. The display panel is blank most of the time, but you can still scan for radio stations, etc. I disconnected the CD changer (but still works), and generally only listen to the radio.
  • Driver assist features include air-conditioning (see below), power steering, power brakes, power windows.

The repairs I have done are listed below:

June-17 New fuel pump June-17 New brake hoses June-17 Repaired Exhaust Pipe July-17 Replaced fuel tank, pump, vent hoses August-17 Replaced coolant reservior May-18 Replaced power steering pressure hose July-18 Replaced transmission September-18 Replaced starter, clutch, flywheel February-19 Installed short shift lever, front ball socket assembly, rear shift coupling February-19 Replaced steering rack boot, tie rod assembly September-19 Replaced catalytic converter November-19 Added secondary coolant recovery tank November-19 Engine computer repaired April-20 Replaced instrument panel circuit board, repaired speedometer June-20 Replaced alternator May-21 Replaced AC Compressor, cleaned up computer wiring. January-22 Replaced Tires, Pirelli 225/50r16, 245/45r16 March-22 Replaced fuel pump November-22 New braided fuel line February-23 Replaced and painted rear bumper April-23 Tested fuses, cleaned and tightened fuel pump harness

At some point I also replaced the instrument pod cover - the old was badly warped but will be included with the car.

I have a pdf of the receipts. Please send me your email and I'm happy to send them to you.

The bad (what doesn’t work or issues):

  • Though the car has a new AC Compressor, there is a leak in the AC line that needs to be repaired.
  • The tachometer stopped working. All other gauges work except for the trip odometer, and should be reliable since the gauge circuit board has been replaced. The oil pressure gauge doesn't kick in in cold weather until the car warms up a bit.
  • After replacing the clutch and flywheel, when pushing the car hard the shifter vibrates (please see video). Short of taking the car apart, I have been unable to find a resolution with three separate mechanics.
  • There is no windshield washer function, which was apparently removed when the engine conversion was done. Didn’t matter to me since I only drive the car in good weather.
  • When I purchased the car, it had an aftermarket wing on the rear hatch. It cracked, so I removed it and filled/painted the holes. They are still visible, however.
  • The driver’s side door does not lock from the outside, which was how I purchased the car. I have never worried about fixing it.
  • The passenger side door circular lock button is disconnected.
  • The dashboard plastic has a few cracks and buckles (please see photos), which I would imagine is pretty typical with this particular car.
  • The dome light, dash lights, and electronic mirror adjustors don’toperate. Could be as simple as a fuse, but I’ve never bothered fixing.
  • All of the service records since I have owned the vehicle will be provided, as well as the fuse and relay layout.
  • When turned fully left or right, the front tires rub very slightly on the housing. I haven't fixed this issue because it almost never occurs.
  • The front bumper skirt is broken. I use zip ties to hold it together, but it still performs its intended function well.

Please bear in mind that this is a forty-plus-year-oldcar, and will require maintenance. It's not like driving a new car, but it's a lot of fun. This would be a great car for someone who likes to work on cars.
