The Overland Automobile Company traces its roots to 1903 in Terre Haute, Indiana founded by Claude Cox a Rose Hulman Graduate with the backing of the Standard Wheel Corporation- an established supplier of wheels ot the carriage industry. Cox successfully produced some interesting and innovative cars for 2 years before production was moved to Indianapolis. Standard Wheel decided to leave the automobile business and sold the company to Cox for $8,000. David Parry became a 51% investor and ran the company as an extension of his highly successful Carriage business until the Panic of 1907 bankrupted him. The company was sold to J.N. Willys in 1908 and production moved to Toledo. OH shortly thereafter. Production continued to grow and Overland remained a top 3 US auto manufacturer though 1919. .
