Vehicle Details

1981High Mileage Vehicles (HMV) Freeway, One of 730 examples made between 1979 and 1982. Designed by Dave Edmondson and built in Burnsville, Minnesota. With approximately 4,500 original miles showing on the functioning odometer. The car’s fiberglass body is finished in red and the color plus the trim are in good condition, as expected. The rear windows can open about two inches each for air ventilation and the sunroof is completely removable. The bodywork is straight and solid, the engine bay is clean as is the cargo area behind the solo seat. My father removed the top of the body during restoration and ensured the frame was solid and free of any defects. The Freeway came with a welded tubular steel frame, with a secondary perimeter frame at bumper height to protect the driver from impacts. Its suspension was fully independent. The lower body included a full undertray to reduce the drag coefficient of the vehicle. This Freeway has the larger 27.6-CID Tecumseh single-cylinder, four-cycle engine with 16 horsepower. The drivetrain uses a centrifugal clutch with final drive to the rear wheel by way of chain. It has all the DOT indicators and mirrors, such as turn signals, taillights, brake lights, running lights, head lamp and dash lights and power factory windscreen wiper. Inside, there’s the factory black driver’s seat that is in great condition. The original brown carpet was replaced with black and is a much cleaner look. The dash has the basic necessities that all function properly: speedometer with an odometer, amp meter, gas gauge and temperature gauge. The HMV Freeway was developed under similar circumstances to what we’re experiencing today. But unlike today there was another dynamic to high fuel prices; availability. In the 70’s it was common to wait for hours in line at the gas station for the privilege of pumping an allotted amount of gas in your car. Enter the HMV Freeway. Envisioned by designer Dave Edmonson as a solo commuter vehicle capable of 60 to 80 mpg with a top speed of 70 mph (The OPEC fuel crisis also established the national speed limit of 55 MPH to save fuel). The history of this vehicle is amazing and shows the true American ingenuity and innovation. Pull up next to a virtue signaling Prius or Tesla show them a true environmentally friendly vehicle doesn’t have to be electric. Or take it to the next level and install a Lithium-Ion battery and electric motor and make it an electric vehicle. Embrace the original or make it your own. It’s a great simple platform that is sure to get attention. With only 700ish produced you’re likely to be the only Freeway at the car show let alone cruising in town.Vehicle is currently located in Riverside County, CA but will be coming to Prescott, AZ 8/7/22. Transportation may be possible for a reasonable transportation fee.
