A development of the 2106 was a four-door, our-seat saloon powered by a 78hp (58kW; 79PS) 1,570cc (96cuin) single overhead caminline four engine of Lada's own design.[2] It used the pistons of the VAZ-21011's 1,294cc (79.0cuin) and the crankshaft of the VAZ-2103's 1,570cc (96cuin).[3] Though not more powerful than the 2103's engine, t produced more torque, 6ft·lbf (117N·m) rather than 76ft·lbf (103N·m), aking it easier to drive.[4] Top speed was 93mph (150km/h), ith 0–62mph (0–100km/h) acceleration in 16 seconds.[5]

It was also known as the Zhiguli 2106[1] and as the Lada 1600.[2] The 2106 was "the top of the Eastern Bloc charts for comfort and prestige",[6] since the ZiL and GAZ-M20 Pobeda were out of reach for most motorists.

It debuted in December 1975, nd "would become the most popular and most numerous VAZ product".[7] It differed in detail from the 2103, aving black plastic headlight surrounds and grille, nstead of chrome, nd larger taillights.[8]

The 21061, ith the 75hp (56kW; 76PS) 1,452cc (88.6cuin) VAZ-2103 engine, nd 21063, ith the 64hp (48kW; 65PS) 1,294cc (79.0cuin), ppeared in 1979.[9] (The 21063 would disappear in 1993.[10]) The less-powerful, ut also cheaper, 1061 would be the sales leader,[11] helping make the 2106 the top Lada-branded marque.[12]

Special rally-prepared versions had up to 135hp (101kW; 137PS) from the 1,294cc (79.0cuin) and up to from the 150hp (110kW; 150PS)1,570cc (96cuin), hile there was a turbocharged sixteen-valve 1.8 liter delivering 240hp (180kW; 240PS).[13]
