1956 Oldsmobile Super 88 4-Door Sedan
1956 Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight
1956 Oldsmobile Super 88, 4-door sedan. Same 324 cu. in. 4 bbl motor as the 98, but with a shorter frame and body. Has heavy-duty dual-snorkel air cleaner. Factory rear sway bar, similar to the one fond on 70s Pontiac Trans Ams, true to the innovator spirit of Oldsmobiles in those years!
This was an Arizona garage-kept car until July 2022 when it came to the Midwest, garage-kept here, as well. I spent many years in the body shop business and know what new paint can hide. This car has all original paint, no spot work ever, because any repair done a long time ago would be showing. Sides are nice with the exception of some scratches. Roof, hood, trunk paint is worn through to primer and in some small spots, bare metal. Patina, they call it! But they are only original once so I'm not messing with it. Three minor dents: one in left front fender, back of right rocker panel, and upper front bumper bar. Has a two-piece front bumper, bottom is fine.
Chrome on car is very nice, no pits on headlight rims, door handles, emblems. Nothing on outside body has been replaced except for tail light lens and gaskets, and still have the originals for those. Still has T3 headlight on the passenger side.
All original EZ glass with exception of driver's door glass. Right rear door vent window has a crack. All windows work well and doors shut real nice. Front and rear windows have original rubbers with no cracks. Still has original, good trunk rubber as well as original spare tire and jack.
Interior is all original except seats have been nicely done at some point, still in very good shape. Material coming loose on door panels. Arm rests and sun visor need work. Front carpet on driver's side is shot, passenger side is good as well as rear carpet. Has the Oldsmobile mirror on the passenger visor. Gas gauge, dash lights all work. Cold light still works, a green light that says "cold" comes on when you first start the car and goes off after three or four minutes. Horn and turn signals work. Radio will make static, speaker is probably shot. Dual ashtrays light up. Has a small, vertical green light in doors when they are closed. Dome light works with front doors.
Recently-replaced items include: tires, brake booster and master cylinder, valve cover gaskets. All new radiator hoses, preformed heater hoses where available, thermostat, anti freeze, oil, and filter. New oil in air cleaner, distributor cap, points, condenser, rotor vacuum advance with NOS unit that was in Delco box, hood pad, tail light lens, and gaskets. All four door rubbers. Only thing I would like to do is clean the rear blow by tube on the back of the motor, it has two bolts down by the distributor, but at almost 70 years old, I can't lean over that fender anymore. The manual says it should be cleaned every other oil change. I cleaned the filler cap, that's another breather. Car runs and drives well for its age.
Ephemera includes the bill of sale, quote documents, two user manuals, an owner portfolio and shop manual, original title, 1956 safety inspection affidavit, registrations from 1956-1971, 1974, 1984, 1991, 1994-1995, 2011, 2021-2023, and police report from when the car was stolen and retrieved in 1970, among other items.
