Description:
1957 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight
One-owner New York car until I bought5 years ago. Rust-free, time-capsule, perfectly imperfect, with unusual amount of documented history of the car: In its 55,843 miles it still wears most of its original sapphire mist paint, all of its original deluxe interior, and it comes with files of original purchase papers and meticulously kept handwritten maintenance records by the original owner, Ralph (see photo), who bought the car with his father as a teenager and preserved it for the rest of his life. His St. Christopher's medal still hangs from steering column. Files I received from his sister also contain some license plates he took off the car in the early 60s -- one is mounted on front.Perfectly imperfect: Factory paint is stunning. Have kept it hand-waxed, always stored inside. Roof and top of the passenger front fender were repainted in 1964 -- I have the $60 invoice for that paint work Ralph had done -- and they are a little lighter color and different finish than the original paint. The passenger front door has some paint damage from what looks like a heat gun(?) applied in one spot apparently many years ago. But overall appearance still impressive. Chrome very nice original. Interior really special because Ralph had it covered in plastic until I decided to carefully remove plastic because it was discolored. I felt stunning colors and materials, including leather, needed to be seen in their glory. Had plastic on the door panels as well. Carpet is factory but faded where not covered by the front mat, darker blue where covered by the original aftermarket mat. Foam in seats is leaving some powder on the floor where it has aged, but seats still supple. Driver's side seat bottom sags in some. Headliner very nice.
I bought the car even though it had not run for awhile-- because it was so original, deluxe and one-owner. Top mechanic carefully prepared engine before starting it. Rebuilt carb, rebuilt brakes. New gas tank. Etc. Four-year-old wide whites. Has been carefully maintained (lead subsitute, zinc additive, no-ethanol gas) and regularly driven, including 150-mile highway roadtrips. Has slight oil leaks, very slow leak at radiator neck. Both headlights work on bright, but only one on low beam. Radio, clock don't work, but heaterdoes. Power windows work great. Reliable, original car with strong preservation.
***That's Ralph in pic at back bumper of this very car around 1959 in Brooklyn, where car was sold new from dealership to Ralph's father, according to papers and Ralph's archive on the car that will come with the car -- in Ralph's files in a plastic tub (Ralph was an accountant, so he was quite the record-keeper).
