Before I get into the specifics of this car, I'd like to take the opportunity to talk about "72" 442's...if you are a well informed Olds Nut, disregard the following paragraph.
1972 was a very strange year for the 442. The 442 was a "package" that was ordered (W29) instead of being a model initself. So, gone were the 344 VIN we've come to use to validate 442's. 1972 442's are much harder to authenticate. I see most 72 442's that are for sale, are NOT real 442's. The problem was...you could order a 442 with 5 different engines. options...thats right, 5! The 455 being the biggest... 1972 W30 442's aredenotated by a X in the VIN...the W30 could only be ordered with the W29 package...so therefore the only verifiable 1972 442 by VIN code would be a X Code W30. This is why some people areapprehensive about paying a premium for a 72' 442...because 90% of them are clones. The only way to authenticate a 72 442 is with a Broadcast Card with a W29 code or a Window Sticker. Even then...you could order a 1972 442 with a 350 2bbl...there is 4separateVIN codes that notate the engine that came with the car...it should also be known these codes only indicate the engine option...not if it was a 442 or not...not withstanding the X code cars. This is why 1972 442's typically bring less of a premium...because nobody is quite sure what they are. I could go on and on about this...but if you need further understanding...call me.
This 1972 442 455 Convertible was purchased new by Ron Medlin, from Kansas City. He purchased the car for his wife new in May, 1972. This car was Ron and his wife Pattys' prizedpossession. I purchased the car from them some time ago. I spoke with Ron on the phone a few days ago. I'm happy to share his contact info with the new owner. Idon't want to talk too much about Ron, because the new owner may contact him...but I will say he is the most particular man I ever met...ever. He takes care of his things better than anyone I have ever met...end of story.

Condition:Alright, now that I said all that, lets talk about the car! The U Code W29 production was around 100 units. This is the most original, well preserved example in existence. The car is about as original as you can get. The car wears its' original coat of Matador Red paint...in fantastic shape for being 46 years old! By no means perfect...but you would never paint this car...it would be a dis-service to this car. Original bumpers are excellent. This car has never had any patch panels or anything like that...it still has its' red oxide primer under the car. This is not nor has it ever been a rusty car...its' all original paint...so the proof is right there...no further discussion needed.
The interior of this car is 100% original, aside from the front seat upholstery...which was replaced due to a seam split on the drivers seat...I ordered a legendary brandexact reproduction, but decided to have the front seats reupholstered so everything would match and look correct. Aside from that, the interior is 100% original, including the carpet and looks new. EVERYTHING works...A/C is ice cold. Every bulb in the interior works, including map lights and console lights. The car has only 75,000 miles on it, and interior shows better than that. Even the Government mandated January 1972 seat belt light and buzzer work. The stereo is a 1972 dealer installed 8 track player that works. The car was delivered that way...(I have the paperwork) but was installed at the Dealer...since it was delivered that way...it stayed that way. Even the original "new car" 1972 emissions decal is still on the sun visor! Wild! Bottom line...interior is like new...everything works like new. On a final note...the convertible top is new. Icouldn't deal with the hard eisenglass rear window...and the top...over 46 years was shrinking...all the glass is original, including the windshield.
The drivetrain on this car is all original...fan clutch to carb to distributor to transmission to rear end...the car runs like a clock! Unreal! Does not smoke, does not tick...does not leak...only gaskets and maintenance items were replaced...perfect oil pressure...never runs hot. Nothingwas off the sheIf replaced, always rebuilt...I recently drove it 600 miles at 85mph with the A/C on...drives like a new car...passed everything but a gas station...yes...its a 455...by no means good on gas...but runs the way it should. Brakes excellent and tires are like new BFG Radial T/A's on the factory SS wheels. The car has the original EXHAUST on it, except the mufflers...those are new...(have original mufflers) and it's still good! Zero exhaust leaks. I had to replace the gas tank...it had a annoying pinhole that would leak when you filled it up...so I bit the bullet and replaced it...and unlike the original owner...I threw it away.
Now besides a exceptional original car, with absolutely every bit of documentation...in exceptional original condition...here is where it really shines!
All the original tags and inspection markings are on the car...the original trunk mat to the original trunk spatter paint...to the original firewall markings, the original grease pencil #'s under the hood and on various othercomponents...including but not limited to rear differential, inside fenders, etc. to the original OK marking on the A/C compressor...to the original color coded snap clamps on the fuel lines...Car has never had the carburetor off the manifold. I bet you never seen black plastic covers on the idle mixture screws? It still has its' ORIGINAL PACKARD PLUG WIRES ON IT! Not REPROS! 2Q72 date coded! Engine never painted, up, cleaned up...just. fogged with a light oil twice a year to keep the rubber soft. It's just ORIGINAL! Yes I have both sets of ORIGINAL keys!
I made this ORIGINAL very rare U Code 455 442 Convertible dead reliable...so it can be driven on demand. It drives like a NEW 1972 442. This car was ordered with all the correct boxes checked...and was preserved to a state that defies logic. Sure, it is not perfect, the paint has several touch ups...the original paint on the engine does not look new..the air cleaner decal is faded...but they only original once...and this car should NOT be touched, painted on, or restored.
I have been collecting rare Pontiacs and Oldsmobiles for many years. I am no novice when it comes to these cars. I know what I have...this car isn't for everyone. This car is for the person that loves ORIGINAL...loves DOCUMENTATION...and understands the pedigree and investment value this car has. This car is also for the person that wants to take their kids or grandkids out and be safe...and make it home without calling a tow truck. I've owned over 100 1970-1972 442's...and this is the most highly documented and best original example...that drives the best...that I have ever owned.
I am not a flipper looking to make a buck. I'm a long time collector...and if you'd like to talk about this car...give me a call! I love talking cars! Car is at my home, available for inspection anytime. Bring your best Oldsmobile expert...the car is what it is!
