Description:

1969 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight Cotner Bevington Ambulance

This 1969 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight was originally purchased as an ambulance by the Dickinson County Hospital in Iowa from coachbuilders Cotner-Bevington. The all-steel conversion by Cotner-Bevington increased the wheelbase by 23 inches and the overall length by about 20 inches. This ambulance was refreshed by the previous owners in 2009 and 2010 for use by a health insurance company as a promotional vehicle, and retains some original ambulance hardware, including the siren, lights, and rescue basket. Some modifications are present, including Cragar wheels and a repaint in blue from a previous all-white scheme. This Oldsmobile is offered by with a clean New Jersey title.
The Cotner-Bevington conversion lengthened the 98 substantially, and improved its load-carrying abilities with single-piece girder frame extensions, along with extra-heavy duty springs and shocks. Cragar wheels are fitted, rather than the correct 15″ steel wheels with hubcaps noted by the brochure for the model. The previous owners repainted the ambulance in blue with a white top from all-white around 2010. The seller says that rust repair was limited to fixing a baseball sized hole in the hood. The seller had the ambulance repainted again in early 2017 to help clean it up after removing the insurance company's logos and graphics.
The forward cabin is fairly standard for a 1969 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight, though with additional switchgear adjacent to the headlight switch for the sirens, and auxiliary gauges mounted below the dash on both sides of the steering column. This ambulance previously had red upholstery, but the cabin has been redone in blue throughout. The inner part of the ashtray is missing, though the door is still in place and can be seen in the open position in the interior photos. The odometer is working, though the 24,281 miles indicated are not believed to be accurate.
The rear cargo area has been redone and carpeted as well, in blue to match the forward cabin. The original cabinets and EMT jump seats are intact, and the rescue basket is stowed from hooks over the windows.
Power comes from a 455ci Oldsmobile V8, which was installed by the previous owners during the initial restoration. The engine is backed by a Turbo-Hydramatic transmission and a 2.56 ratio rear end. Recent services include repairing the starter, and replacing the battery leads. The seller has also replaced one of the lower ball joints, changed the oil and replaced some of the bulbs and sockets for various lights around the car. No mechanical issues are noted.
Photos of the underside of this Ambulance are provided in the gallery link below. The only noted rust remaining on the car is a small area under the windshield on the passenger side, view-able from inside the vehicle with some trim pulled away. A photo of the area is provided in the gallery link below. Per the seller, only minor surface rust is present on the underside of the vehicle.
A brochure from Cotner-Bevington, a division of Divco-Wayne, is included and shows several of the commercial platforms available, including ambulances and hearses.
Photos of the car as-acquired, and during the repaint process are included in the gallery link below.
