Are you an Oldsmobile Fan or Cutlass Enthusiast?
Would you like a rare classic that has been professionally restored and is ready to drive and enjoy?
Do you want a convertible that the whole family can fit in and you can head out to the cruise-ins, local shows, sporting events or just out for a Sunday drive and maybe a stop for some ice cream?
Well, if you have been shaking your head yes then this 1971 Cutlass SX Convertible might be exactly what you have been searching for!!!
The Cutlass SX is truly the undiscovered General Motors Muscle car and will continue to gain in popularity and value as more collector car enthusiasts discover these rare gems. Sophisticated styling, luxury options, and big block performance gave the Cutlass SX the reputation as the Gentleman's 442 muscle Car. The production numbers for the SX were less than half that of the highly sought after 442 during the 2 years of production in 1970 and 1971. In 1971 only 357 Convertible SX models were produced making this one very rare GM Muscle car!!
This is actually the 2nd SX convertible I have owned and ironically the first one was the exact same color which is an absolutely awesome Platinum Mist Metallic with Black top and interior. This particular SX originally came out of the Northwest part of the country and a gentleman who had owned it for a little over 5 years did a frame-off restoration on it about 3 years ago. Unfortunately, shortly after finishing the restoration he passed away and his estate sold the car to an enthusiast in Ohio who owned it for a little less than a year. He drove it a fair amount last summer putting about 2000 miles on it with his family going to various cruise-ins and car shows. He found another rare car he wanted and only had room for one collector car in the garage so he decided to let this Cutlass SX go to the next lucky owner....maybe you??!!! Although I am quite positive this is an original, factory ordered SX I do not have the build sheet to prove that. It has all of the correct equipment and no sign of it being cloned. I will do my best to provide you with enough large images, a video of the car running and an honest description to help you decide if this rare beauty belongs in your garage. As with all of my classics I do have this Cutlass advertised on several other sites in addition to my own. Therefore if you want to scoop this SX Convertible up before the next car guy or gal does feel free to call me to discuss how we can make that happen. Sit back and enjoy!!
The information received from the gentlemans family who passed away shortly after the restoration was completed indicated that the owner of this SX Convertible had a restoration shop perform a frame off restoration which was completed about 3 years ago. The body was stripped to bare metal as was the underside of the car and was then repainted in the original Platinum Mist Metallic color it came from the factory with. In fact, as you will see later in the listing, the floorpans were also painted in the original body color. The body is extremely straight and body panels gaps are excellent. As I am sure you have noticed, a more aggressive 442 Styled Hood was added most likely at the time of the restoration. The black racing stripes on the hood add to the muscle car look of this rare SX. Originally the SX came with a standard flat hood for that Plain Jane look, however, lets face it, with that powerful 455 V8 power plant this car deserves the more aggressive look that the dual scoop 442 hood provides. It is a steel reinforced fiberglass hood that fits great and is held down with the correct style hood locks. The overall paint quality is very good however there are some areas where the metallic is uneven. It is much less noticeable out in the sunlight but can be seen under fluorescent lights more. Another great feature of the SX was the rear bumper with the exhaust cut outs for the trumpet exhaust tips just like the 442. The bumpers look fantastic as does all of the stainless and chrome trim. Sport mirrors on both sides with the drivers side being a remote adjustable mirror. I did notice a crack in the paint on the lower passenger quarter panel below the chrome body trim. This would be very easy to have spotted in if it bothered you but since it is so low it is barely noticeable. The only other flaw I noticed is a very small hairline crack in the paint on each side behind the convertible top in front of the trunk which is common especially on big block cars. Otherwise I do not see any signs of rust or previous rust repair and this SX appears to have all of its original body panels other than the hood which I mentioned. This is a beautiful car that you can drive and enjoy and will be welcome at any cruise-in or local shows where it will most likely win its share of trophies if that is what you enjoy. Here is a photo tour of the body:

Hopefully the next lucky owner of this SX Convertible will drop the top every chance they get but it also nice to know that the black convertible top was replaced at the time of restoration and works great too. In fact the car looks pretty awesome with the black top up as well when needed. The rear window is glass and is crystal clear. When the top is down there is a brand new boot cover to install giving it a neat finished look. Here are some pics with the top up:
Complimenting the Platinum mist metallic exterior is a great looking black interior with woodgrain accents along the door panels and dash. Most of the SX models came just as this one with a bench seat up front with the fold down arm rest. This makes it extremely comfortable to spread out or have your honey slide up next to you on those romantic drives. The interior looks practically brand new and I believe the seats are leather, or if not, they are as soft as leather. Door panels, carpeting, dash pad all look close to brand new. This SX also has power windows which work well. Also equipped with the factory Sport steering wheel and tilt column. Dash is equipped with the Rally Pac Tach and gauges which all seem to be functioning correctly. Factory original seat belts for front and rear passengers. Overall the interior on this Cutlass SX looks practically showroom new. Check it out:

Powering this awesome '71 SX Convertible is super strong 455 ci 4bbl V8. Although it is not the original matching numbers motor it is a period correct 455 that was completely rebuilt at the time of restoration according to the family of the gentleman who had the restoration done. It is mated to what could be the original Turbo Hydramatic 400 Automatic transmission that shifts strong and smooth. Factory options include power steering, power front disc brakes and the dual exhaust with the same trumpet style tips and bumper with cutouts as the 442. The SX also has essentially the same suspension system as the 442 which makes handling a joy. This SX runs like a dream and glides on the road like a Cadillac but will set you back in your seat when you mash the accelerator! Stock manifolds breathe out through a 2 1/2 inch exhaust that sounds great. Rear end appears to be the very desirable W-27 rear with very highway friendly gearing so you can cruise on long trips with no issues. As you will see in the pics below the engine bay has been very nicely detailed out for show. Make sure you also listen to the video of this SX starting up and running. As mentioned previously, during the frame off restoration that floorpans and frame rails were stripped and painted. The floorpans appear to be all original and were painted body color and look very slick still. Inside of the trunk was spatter painted and appears to be all original sheet metal. Original Oldsmobile wheels wrapped in white letter radials with plenty of tread left look great. Have a look under the hood and under this beauty:
