Description:
1968 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 Tribute
This is NOT a factory 442 as you can tell from the VIN. However, the VIN tag is the only thing that would give that away. The paint is good driver quality, NOT show quality. The engine is a very strong 455 cid, NOT the original 350. The trans is a TH 400, and the rear end gear ratio is unknown. There are a few real 442s on ebay and they're priced accordingly. There are a few 442 tribute 442s offered by dealers on ebay, and they are priced accordingly. All of that said, this car has had over $10K in parts installed in the last 2-3 years, actually in the last 1500-1800 miles, to make it look better, ride better and run better, yet it is priced to sell.In the engine compartment, a recent aluminum radiator was installed. Also recent, hoses and belts, underhood insulation pad, Edelbrock Performer carb, alternator, Optima battery, brake booster and master cylinder. The fuel tank sending unit and related hoses and fittings were replaced.
The suspension and steering include completely rebuilt steering including the steering gearbox. Front 2" dropped spindles, front disc brakes, shocks all the way around, a rear sway bar, rear 2" shorter springs, five new wheels that give a modern touch to an older style, and tires were installed. The original wheels were good, but the disc brakes didn't work with 14" wheels.
The trunk is clean with no rust. The car has all the correct 442 badging, including the glove box, later 442 (1970?) side mirrors, a new windshield and new front and rear bumpers. It now has four H4 Halogen headlights with a heavy duty relay. The exhaust flows correctly through the trumpet tips in the bumper. The top is new; a cloth top with new wires, pads, and weatherstripping was installed. The rear window is plastic. All of the window glass is good and the side windows roll up and down as they should.
The seats and door panels were done before I got the car, and the later year (1970?) 442 steering wheel was also there, so we continued with new carpet, scuff plates, seat belts, window crank handles, and door handle trim. Under dash digital gauges are now in place. The biggie here in the arid zone, is AC. Vintage Air came out with AC for this car recently, and we got what must have been a Beta model. After some local mods, the unit was made to fit correctly. It chills out the front seat passengers and even cools them with the top down in the arid zone summer with its 4-speed fan.
Someone is going to get a great cruiser for what this car is probably going to end up selling for. The "coke bottle" body design, the ride height, the more than adequate power and that big car ride with the top down make it hard to part with, but, it's a case of so many cars and so little time....
