Description:

1951 MG MGTD

I am pleased to offer this 3 owner 1951 MGTD. It is for sale after 63 years of ownership. Most people consider 20 years to be long term ownership. What does that make 63 years of ownership? The current owner purchased the car in 1959!! VIN # is 6521/71524.
This car was frame-off restored in the early 90's and features a #'s matching drivetrain with period Shorrock supercharger added. The original green leather interior was retained but new leather seat covers and door panels will convey with the car. The convertible top has not been opened in the last 20 years and will likely need to be replaced. The original side curtains are included (see pics) and need to be cleaned but are in good original condition. I was amazed to see the original jack and tools along with the original copper hammer. The Pirelli tires appear to be circa early 1990's so they'll need to be replaced.
Owner notes that the odometer stopped working years ago so exact mileage is unknown.
Notes from the seller:
I had an Air Force career and drove the car coast-to-coast more than once, and took it with me for a three-year stint in West Germany in the 1960's, I do know every time a wrench was put on it, except for a total frame-up restoration by a specialist in the early 1990's. We replaced all roller bearings regardless of wear, all rubber parts with neoprene, except for the pads between the leaf springs, installed electronic ignition, increased to 1300 cc, used Porsche racing pistons with lower skirt oil rings to reduce scuff at startup, stainless steel exhaust, a higher lift cam and heavy-duty clutch. Earlier, the same specialist changed out the rear end for a higher ratio, so you have to mentally convert your shown speedometer speed. We added a Shorrock blower that I had purchased from Allard's in London in mid-1970's. I haven't dyno tested the engine, but estimate nearly doubling original HP and torque. Once underway you rarely need to shift. Were I younger, I would find the right over-drive unit to allow higher cruising speeds and convert to front disc brakes. We kept the original black color for body and the original green leather interior. To perk up its looks we added chrome wires, Pirelli radials. I kept the earlier wires, had them repainted Porsche silver, left good bias ply Dunlop's and the original spare, and they and other original parts (including a rare and hard to find radiator shell) and a Moss Motors green upholstery kit convey with the car. Finally, I have not lifted the top for thirty years. It and the side curtains are included. Not sure about the top but the side curtains should clean up well (see pics). Otherwise, he has a powerful, reliable performing antique sports car. Please note that the Pirelli tires date back to the early 1990's and will need to be replaced for everyday driving.
