DETAILED DESCRIPTIONS
ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS! This car may be the most beautiful custom MGA anywhere. Just this week I drove it to Manito Park in Spokane. As soon as the car stopped, a dozen gawkers formed around it. It is an eye-catching uniquely deep red color. It sparkles in the sun and its workmanship says, “This car was painstakingly perfected.”
RESTORED, THEN CUSTOMIZED TO A DAZZLING MGA SPECIAL.A rust-free car was sought and purchased. An extensive body-on restoration sparing no expense was completed, mostly original. Only the finest parts and materials were used. After restoring to original, then custom parts were fabricated and installed, transforming the car into this MGA Special. These modifications and the quality of the work performed on the car set it apart.
NEW MGB MOTOR WITH MILD CAM & OIL COOLER. This MGA is powered by a brand new, rebuilt 1.8-liter MGB five (5) main bearing engine with a mild racing cam and oil cooler. The original MGA motor had only three (3) main bearings, so the new motor is much better. Every mechanical engine part was rebuilt or replaced, including the dual SU H-4 carburetors, starter, water pump, oil pump, distributor, gold 40,000-volt sport coil, and new fuel lines. The fuel pump is the highest quality modern aftermarket Hardi pump from Germany. It is shaped so closely to the original SU pump that it bolts directly into its place. The carburetors are served by braided stainless steel hoses. The oil cooler has new rubber oil lines with brass fittings. The MGB engine number is 18V883AE-L8909, an 1800 motor.
CUSTOM PAINTWORK. The body was sanded to bare metal, then primed, filled, and sanded over and over, repeated endlessly until a perfectionist determined that every panel was laser straight. The base coat/clear coat paint is named “Lipstick Red,” a custom blend, not an original MG color. This painstakingly created color is slightly darker than common auto paint reds. It has blue in it, resulting in a deep, rich, true red, with no orange hue. The difference is obvious when this car parks next to another red sports car. The color and silky-smooth finish are noticeably superior. We have never seen better paintwork on any MGA, except maybe Todd O’Dell’s white Twin Cam in Canada. Factory gray body piping was carefully installed, molded very tightly, during re-assembly.
SPECIAL WHEELS MAKE THE CAR WIDER THAN STOCK.These impressive wheels are wider than stock MGA wheels. They change the entire car and make it look different, better than other MGAs. The whole car appears lower and wider because it is, resulting in a visibly aggressive stance on the ground. Four Triumph TR6 wheels were acquired and converted to custom MGA wheels. They were sanded to bare metal and heavily powder coated in bulletproof metallic Camaro Silver. They are adorned with Lipstick Red center caps, black and silver metal MG logos, deluxe stainless steel valve stems, and Dunlop decals sourced from England. The rims are an inch and a half wider (1-1/2”) than stock MGA wheels, but have the same round holes as MGA wheels, so they look correct to the car. The tire size is 185 65 R15. The tires have about 160 miles on them.
BETTER STANCE. MGA owners always notice that this car has a better stance on the ground than their MGA but can’t figure out why. The car presents itself on the pavement like a mini-Cobra. Other MGA’s look puny next to this one, with their skinny wheels and tires. The secret is the SPECIAL WHEELS, which are much wider than stock. The holes are identical to stock steel MGA wheels, and the silver color also looks like stock MGA wheels, so no one notices that the wheels are different. The special wheels and tires create a THREE-INCHWIDER TRACK which no one perceives until it’s pointed out. The tires sit slightly outboard from the body, but just barely. The fantastic look of this car cannot be over-emphasized. We have never seen an MGA that equals it. The improved stance looks so tremendous that we expect new a fad of MGA owners copying our wheels. The competition windscreen makes it lower than stock as well. This MGA is WIDER and LOWER than the other MGAs advertised for sale.
SEBRING VALANCE. The original metal front valance, front bumper, over riders, bumper brackets and front extension assembly were removed to accommodate a Sebring fiberglass front valance. This valance has no holes or slots and is trimmed with custom fit black piping. It creates a race car vibe and shows off lots of beautiful red paint. The horn was relocated under the car with a specially fabricated bracket.
CHROME MESH GRILLE INSERT. The original vertical-bar grille slats were removed, and a chrome mesh grille insert was installed. The chrome grille surround and MG boss were retained and buffed not re-chromed. The gleaming mesh grille emphasizes the overall racy and custom appearance of the car. It modernizes the vehicle and distinguishes it from standard MGA’s. The revised grille was trimmed with custom fit black piping to match the car’s red and black theme.
TWIN BULLET RACING MIRRORS. Two aerodynamic bullet style chrome plated racing mirrors are mounted on the fenders, adding more period correct grand prix style. Ball and cup design allows maximum adjustment.
COMPETITION WINDSCREEN MAKES THE CAR LOWER THAN STOCK. This item by itself completely transforms the car into an aerodynamic racer. It lowers the entire car by five inches! This MGA is not only WIDER than a stock MGA but is also LOWER than stock. An original MGA windshield frame is used, with the top bar removed and the two side posts cut short. Photos are available that show the carefully machined tops of the side posts, perfectly rounded off and highly polished. The windscreen is ten inches high yet still protects the driver, so no wind hits your face while driving. Goggles are for style not necessity with this car. The competition windscreen uses the same posts, bolts and holes as the regular windshield, so they are interchangeable. The original windscreen comes with the car and can be installed using the same four mounting bolts.
BLEUMEL BEECH STEERING WHEEL. This devastatingly gorgeous treasure is the highlight of the interior. The build plan required the best MGA steering wheel in the world, period. Nothing can top this Bleumel Twin Cam Special three spoke beech steering wheel. It is finished in a golden caramel color with a tapered aluminum MG Logo boss. The spokes are lightweight aluminum. The wood rim has finger holds on the reverse side. This is a rare, high-priced option. You feel the quality of this MGA in your hands the whole time you are in the car.
HAND-MADE LEMANS ALUMINUM TONNEAU COVER. This lightweight racing option covering the passenger side of the cockpit is the most distinctive modification of all. Handmade by a metal fabricator on an English wheel, with a lattice of aluminum rod stiffeners fastened to the underside. It can be easily installed or removed in two minutes, using four fastening points (two handmade brackets attached to cockpit rails fastened with Dzuz, one bracket over the front side curtain bolt fastened by the knurled chrome knob, and a post into the side curtain hole), When tightened, it bolts down snug and rattle free. The underside is finished in black. This racing option makes the entire bodywork sleek and aerodynamic, especially when viewed from the rear. Look at the photo of the car taken straight on from the rear and you’ll see how low and sleek the bodywork is. The carefulness of this build is demonstrated by the alignment of the tonneau’s Dzuz fasteners. The screwdriver slots of the bolt heads are perfectly aligned to be parallel to the bodywork when tightened. This precision is intentional and proves this car’s unsurpassed quality.
CARRERA HEADREST FAIRING. The fiberglassfairing has a black leather pad trimmed in red piping exactly matching the seat upholstery. It is trimmed with a thick band of black rubber U-channel around the base to protect the paintwork. The fairing can be easily installed or removed in one minute for trunk access. Simply unscrew a long bolt that has a big plastic knob as the bolt head and lift the fairing off the car. The over-the-top styling of the fairing may be too showy for some buyers who prefer the lower sleeker look of the MGA with no fairing. It's easily removed, making the bodywork even sleeker. Accordingly, a complete set of photos of the car without the fairing is available.
ROARING MONZA DUAL EXHAUST. This 16-gauge aluminized, fully-welded performance option produces a deep, powerful growl. It has a durable black crackle finish, dual tailpipes and chrome plated stainless steel tips. The Monza exhaust looks as good as it sounds and gets noticed because the chrome dual pipes protrude slightly.
REAR BUMPER DELETE. The rear bumper and brackets were removed, but both factory bumper over riders were retained. This achieves a cleaner, less cluttered look with less chrome and more curved red bodywork showing. Each over rider is bolted to its corresponding bumper bolt with a specially made bracket.
CUSTOM LICENSE PLATE BRACKET & LAMP. The factory license plate bracket with its lamp that originally bolted to the bumper has been replaced. A bespoke bracket was fabricated, enabling the license plate assembly and lamp to be bolted to the frame ingeniously from underneath, without drilling holes through the bodywork. A genuine, period correct vintage license plate frame from Hollywood Auto Imports is included. This rare artifact was researched and sourced specifically for this build.
EXTENSIVE REBUILD.The car was completely disassembled for paint. The entire chassis was sanded and painted with anti-rust enamel, except for body mounting points. The frame is strong and rust free, although one member has a dent. After all the chassis work was finished with new bolts, washers and bushings, another coat of satin black paint was applied to the entire underneath of the car to protect from rust. The whole underside is clean and black. The entire car including the body was completely original and rust-free; no rust repair was needed.
All parts and panels were removed, replaced, rebuilt, and/or repainted including the wheels, bumpers and mounting brackets, grille, headlights, front lamps, radiator, horn, front disc brakes, suspension parts & bushings, wheel hubs, shock absorbers, bonnet, prop rod &hinges, windshield & wipers, engine, oil cooler, four speed transmission, brake and clutch master cylinders, heater, every part in the engine bay, front fenders & splash aprons, exhaust, seats & sliders, transmission tunnel, shift knob, steering wheel, entire interior down to metal, new wood floorboards & hardware, doors, door pulls, side curtain hardware, battery cover, two 6-volt batteries replaced with one 12-volt & passenger battery tray enlarged and re-welded, rear fenders, rear drum brakes, boot lid, prop rod & hinges, spare tire & clamp, hand crank polished and clear coated, gas tank & straps, filler neck, rear taillight plinths and taillights, and license plate assembly frame and lamp.
The dash was completely stripped, painted, and rebuilt with new aftermarket switches, green turn signal jewel, speaker bezel, horn button, chrome MG logo, and map light assembly. The speedometer was rebuilt by Nisonger Instruments. The rear-view mirror was replaced. All chrome parts such as the headlight rings, windshield, defroster slots, adjustable column spring cover and MGA logos were buffed not re-chromed.
All vital mechanical parts were rebuilt or replaced including the gearbox, brake and clutch master cylinders, front disc brakes, rear wheel cylinders and drum brakes, new brake lines, steering rack and shock absorbers.
WIRING HARNESS. The car has a brand-new aftermarket, but original style, black and yellow bumblebee full wiring harness. Thus, every electrical part has brand new wiring. The two factory 6-volt batteries were replaced by one modern 12-volt battery. The passenger's side battery tray was enlarged by welding in a larger frame.A new ground cable was installed and attached to the frame.
INTERIOR. The seats were rebuilt with new bases, foams, and sliders. The interior was artfully trimmed in black leather with red piping. Black deluxe carpeting was laid in the entire cockpit, over the transmission tunnel & battery cover, in the rear area behind the seats, and in the entire trunk including the floor, both trunk sides and the spare tire cover. The pedal box was refinished in black and new rubber pedal pads installed. The steering column was refinished in satin black. The new door cards and front cockpit trim are satin black. The metal dash is red to match the car as original from the factory. The cockpit rails show the meticulous forethought with which this car was built, being covered in black leather with black piping, not red piping as you might suspect, to provide superior contrast to the red paintwork. Premium black rubber MG logo floormats protect the carpets.
TOP. The car has a new black Stayfast canvas top featuring a zip out rear window. The top is folded behind the seats as from the factory. This is the highest quality, most expensive top available for an MGA.The top frame is in fine condition, operates smoothly and is finished in the correct tan color. The rear area behind the seats has the proper black vinyl side curtain stowage bag.
NOTE ABOUT TOP. This car has a low competition windscreen. The top does not attach to the competition windscreen and the windshield wipers are removed. The windshield wipers and the original unrestored windscreen with its complete frame and a crack in the glass are included in this sale. They will be shrink wrapped, then wrapped in a new furniture moving blanket, and shipped inside the car with the purchase. The original windscreen can be bolted in place if the owner wants to erect the top. The black Stayfast top and refinished tan top frame are included and are stowed behind the seats in the normal factory location.
NOT INCLUDED. In the interest of full disclosure, no spare tire isincluded, and no side curtains are included. The seller has many MGA parts that may be purchased separately. Side curtains will be included at list price.
PROBLEMS:There are no problems with this car. But it is not perfect. It’s 62 years old. It has a few tiny nicks and/or flaws in the paintwork picked up on the road or in the garage after restoration that are visible upon close examination. There are two or three tiny dimples (smaller than a pencil eraser) on the trunk lid where holes from a former luggage rack were filled. Nothing is broken or malfunctions that we know of. The chrome has small imperfections in the finish because all of it is the original factory chrome from 1960 that was buffed not re-chromed. We think the patina of the chrome actually adds to the car’s charm. The car runs and drives beautifully and the exhaust note through the Monza dual muffler is terrific.
