1970 MG MGB MGBGT
I purchased the GT on eBay over a year ago and haven't been able to move ahead as quickly as I had hoped due to a very painful neck condition I have developed. I had hoped to have a lot of time to finish the job to my satisfaction, but we just purchased a house in Massachusetts due to my wife's "home sickness" and we will be moving in mid-June. Taking the car with us would be my preference, but it will cost over two-grand to ship it. Anyway, about the car:
It lived its life in Arizona. It was purchased by a California resident who did some work on the car, but decided to sell it. He provided a clear title in his name and signed the car over to me on a Bill of Same. I have not registered the car and will be selling it on a Bill of Sale to the new owner. Complicated, but not an unusual situation. It has none of the usual MG rust. The passenger's floor had a couple of small places that had rusted through, and I patched them with POR-15 paint, body filler, and putty. I am sure it is stronger now than it was when new. The patches are not visible frominside or out, and the floors on both sides are covered with HushMat, primarily to keep the driver's side floor cool. The rest of the car is 100% rust free. The only problem that I had with the car when I received it was that it had air-conditioning installed, but it didn't function and was way beyond repair, so I had to remove it, which took a lot of work, and left a couple of vent holes in the dash that resulted in re-positioning the light switch and the choke. The dash and dash cap are in otherwise acceptable condition. Happily, it has a very nice Les Leston steering wheel which is extremely desirable. The seats arevinyl and are black with red piping. They're in great shapefor their age and have no holes orworn-through areas. There is a short crack on the top bolster of the passenger seat beside the side window. It could be easily be repaired by and competent upholstery shop. The seats otherwise look great. The carpets are about what you would expect, but have been covered by full cover mats which look very much like the original carpet. I have carpeted the sills (they were originally rubber). Speaking of rubber, the Arizona sun wasnot kind to the door and vent window sills, which are both pretty easy and inexpensiveto replace. The carpet for the back hatch area is not original, but a correct replacement comes with the car. Finally the horns did not work, and new replacements are included, along with new oil pressure, water temp, and ammeter, along with a mounting panel are included along with many more spares. a spare (used) fuel gauge, speedo, and tach are included. the reason for the replacement gauges is that the senders on the 1977 engine are not compatible with the 1970 instruments. Original senders are available, but are not easy to install. The current mileage shows a bit over 8,000 miles, but I suspect it is actually a bit over 108,000.
Now the good stuff: When I got the car I had the wire wheels sand blasted and powder coated and fitted correct size tires from Tire Rack. They look fabulous and all five of the wheels are in great shape. The paint on the car is just about fantastic; original Flame Red and beautifully applied with only one small flaw on the hood. It was perfectly masked and there is little or no paint on any of the window rubber. It looks great. Hydraulic struts now support the hood (see photo), and battery boxes were installed, along with a battery cut-off switch installed behind the passenger seat (see photo). All the turn-signal lenses and mounts, front and rear, are new. The body is completely straight, and there are no dents or dings anywhere. All parts used in the restoration-to-date were sourced from Moss Motors or Victoria British. No cheap parts.
It needs a rubber-parts suspension rebuild, and alignment, mainly due to my replacing the tie-rod ends which turned out to be different lengths than the originals so it really can't be driven seriously until these items are addressed..
Finally, the engine is from a 1977 B, so it is fine on in-leaded gas. It runs and starts great. It has the SUs (and a new SU fuel pump) and exhaust system from the '70 car, so it looks original (other than the 70 engines were red and the 77 ones were black. It has a four-speed (no overdrive). It will be a super nice GT once a few items are taken care of, including the usual electrical gremlins. As you can see from the photos, the gauges in the center console need to be reinstalled and rewired, so the buyer can expect some fun with Lucas electrics. Due to my health and moving problems and deadlines, I am open to offers. Please let me know if you have any questions. It is important to note that repairing a rusty MGB can be very expensive, and this car is free of rust and has excellent paint. Thanks for reading through this description. Buyer can pick up the vehicle (will require a trailer due to alignment problem) or I will be glad to help with shipping at buyer's expense.
