Price lowered for quick sale.Looking for a classic MGB GT that won't bust your budget? Here's a chance to acquire a well sorted GT that fits right into that hard to find sweet spot between "a driver with some needs" and "concours winner". This is a wonderful A+ driver quality B that has been well preserved, mechanically kept up and has never seen a road with salt.
The ownership history that I learned upon buying the car is that the first owner (California) owned it until 1987. The second owner (also in California) had the car from 1987-2012. The third owner (Arizona) had the car until 2015 before he sold it to a collector in Boston. I purchased the car this past spring to add to my 12 car collection. I was a little over-ambitious in my acquisitions this year and now need to thin the herd of a few that are being driven less than the others.
One of the major selling points of this GT is the overdrive transmission. Only 20% of MGB's were purchased with factory OD which makes a huge difference in highway driving. This one works flawlessly and engages smoothly via a stalk on the right side of the steering column.
Over the years the car seems to have had some touch up here and there and the paint is far from perfect up close. The factory color is very rare, a one-year color called Bedouin Beige, which is more of an antique white or cream color.. That said, it passes the 10-footer test with flying colors as you can see in the photos which I took this month. Dog legs and rockers are solid (see photos). There is a small stress crack (about an inch- see photo) above the drivers side mirror. I've seen this before on other MGB's. The previous owner said it's been the same way for years and isn't a new or growing issue.
The interior is good with most of the original harvest gold factory interior intact. The carpet appears original and is showing some wear in spots. The back seat and rear deck lid carpet show some fade from sun. The front seats were refurbished with Moss MGB cloth seat covers and are in great condition. The headliner (see photo) appears original and is in good shape. All gauges work. The factory radio works! The dash has no cracks and is in nice shape. The door cards show some wear but are in good condition. Both front windows roll up and down without issue and both rear windows pop out as they should. I have added rubber custom fitted MGB floor mats and MG logo seat belt pads.
Chrome and glass is nice all around.
This B currently rides on four Michelin X-One tires with about 70% tread remaining. There is a spare MBG rostyle wheel with trim ring in the trunk but the tire is old and should be replaced.
The engine (and title) show just over 135,000 miles which I believe to be accurate for the car. I have no history to verify whether the engine or transmission has been rebuilt but oil pressure is a steady 65 at 3,000 rpm's. I have a few minor oil drips on my garage floor- typical stuff, but there's no smoke out the tail pipe and I do not have to add oil between oil changes. The 4 speed transmission shifts tighter than any other B I've ever owned (I've had 3 B's and 3 B GT's over the past 20 years). A previous owner added an electric fuel pump. The only mechanical issue to report is some occassional grinding when trying to engage 4th gear. I usually have to hunt for 4th when shifting and haven't explored the issue. I'm thinking it's a bushing in that gear but I don't work on my cars so I haven't attempted to diagnose it beyond that. I drive it like it is and it doesn't bother me.
The nice thing about this car is it's originality. The original dual carbs are still there and no one has done any major modifications. The underside is clean and has only typical surface metal wear. There is zero rust or rot issue of any kind present on the frame or body. This is a dry and solid western car that has always been garaged since coming to the east coast. Another nice added benefit...there's an on-board battery charger already wired-in...no need to get in under the back seat. Just grab the plug on the back seat floor, and attach to a nearby outlet when parked...easy!
Please note that two small badges on the lower rear side of the car and the headlight grilles have been removed since I took these photos. The car is garaged just outside of Charlottesville, Va. and just a few miles from the Charlottesville airport. Fly in and drive home if you wish. I am also happy to work with your shipper. Personal inspections are encouraged with an appointment.
I have tried to honestly describe the car to the best of my knowledge. It is sold "as-is" and there are no warranties given or implied. I'm happy to respond to any questions through the Ebay email system and can usually get back to you within 12 hours, if not less. I have the car listed in other venues so the listing will be taken down as soon as the car sells. Thanks for looking.
