1954 MG TF 1250, dry-stored great running vintage convertible British sports car
1954 MG T-Series TF 1250
MG TF 1250, 1954
Genuine survivor, last owner since early 1980s, sat in dry storage for past 20+ years
Recently brought back to life, fully serviced (fluids changed, lubed, valves adjusted, carbs cleaned and balanced, new battery, fuel tank and lines cleaned, all lights checked), and ready for daily use. Mileage indicated is 23,900 and possibly original.
Body is really excellent….straight, good fit, went over the edges and door bottoms with a magnet looking for plastic filler…and found none. I was told it was repainted (once) many years ago and the paint is still more than presentable for general use and low key shows. Same with interior, good panels, carpets, seats, seals, gaskets, etc.
Runs exceptionally well……135-140 psi compression in every cylinder, 50 psi oil pressure when warm, no smoke, quiet valves, no obvious oil leaks, revs quickly and smoothly. Same with the transmission….does not pop out of gear, good synchromesh, quiet operation.
Brakes were just done, new radials fitted, front end is tight, steering does not bind in corners, exhaust is mellow, charging circuit works properly, wiper motor just cleaned and adjusted, all original gauges work, and tracks straight.
Top and side curtains appear to be new, I just had a new tonneau installed, new seat belts, chrome is all very good to excellent, VERY clean underneath (and paint matches the exterior), overall, a beautiful well kept original car. The kind that is so hard to find now, 62 years after this car was built.
And, of course, it has the best single factory option…wire wheels. When added to the folding windshield, sweeping fenders, running boards….gives this MG TF a wonderful classic look.
Have driven the car a fair amount, has never let me down, starts instantly, runs perfectly, zips along as well as the best TFs (that is, 60-70 mph on the highway is fine but most fun ‘round winding country roads). And, I would hope, the photos tell the rest. Body mounts are not rusty, wood framing looks good as do the wood floors, engine bay is very clean, runs cool on a hot day, what else is there?
I have tried my best to represent this car as accurately as I can. Even to the point of being able to quote such VERY important items as compression and oil pressure. Look as I have, can’t really find anything significantly wrong with this car. In my eye, a TF with wire wheels is as beautiful a post war English as exists, and IF you agree…..here is your dream car. Ready to drive most anywhere.
