1963 Mercury Monterey Custom Sedan

For direct sale, an early 60's era Mercury. This well-presented example is of a 2-owner 1963 Mercury Monterey Custom sedan. This beauty is a "breezeway, "meaning the back window rolls down. That means all you hair-conscious drivers need not worry. This Merk comes with hand-operated (via two dash-mounted pull knobs) floor vents. You can enjoy a cool breeze with the windows rolled up! It's perfect for highway cruising. Fifty-two thousand two hundred original title verified miles, and all original condition! Covered in Castilian Gold, the interior fabric with its metal thread is in great shape.HistoryI purchased the car from two neighbors whose father had kept it in a garage since he bought it. I've owned it for a year now and have made several changes to it in that time, all for driveability and safety. These include:• Cleaned, boiled, and sealed gas tank with blown-out lines and a new fuel-sending unit.• Rebuild Brake booster unit• New brake master cylinder with two lines as opposed to the single factory unit• Replaced individual brake cylinders and front shoes.• New coil• New 8mm spark plug wires.• Rebuilt carburetorI have saved the original parts in every instance and will include them in the sale.As an anecdotal note, I had a few instances of being overly impressed with the way the former owner kept this auto. One was when I attempted to replace the spark plugs. I pulled the lead plug only to see it was in no different condition than the one I had planned to replace it with. The second came when I started on the brakes and pulled the front passenger-side hub cap. I thought I would mark them (as to their location) only to find they had already been marked,The car is stunning. The paint is clear and well-maintained with no "patina," and the chrome is superb all around the vehicle, inside and out. The glass and mirrors are clear, and everything works as it should, with two exceptions: The motorized driver's seat does not function, as does the dome light. It's cliche, I realize, but my grandfather had one of these. He was precisely to whom this car was marketed: A family man who might have worked on a production line but was promoted to a foreman. It's a perfect family cruiser. I recall being in the back seat, roughhousing with my brothers and cousins.I'm selling to help pay for a new water well. If that were not our concern, I'd save this beauty and drive her well into my retirement.ExteriorThis car is bathed in chrome from the chromed inward V shaver style front grille with its dual wide bezel headlights on either side to the rear bumper. Between the two bumpers is a hard, polished steel with no rust. The door gaps are as designed by the factory. All four doors have nice chromed window framing, and the roofline is unique in its own fantastic way, particularly on that B pillar. A long, LONG trunk line sporting a tasteful fin on either side frames another "shaver" styled back end chrome piece with 3 Dixie cup-shaped tail lights on either edge and a near-perfect chromed bumper below. Badging looks excellent; as mentioned, the rear window drops with the flick of a dashboard switch. No A/c, but then you don't need it with the window vents, floor vents, and rear breezeway window. The car rides on 14-inch wheels wrapped in 215/75R14 thin whitewall that are in great shape.InteriorOpen the doors, and slide on in. But before you do, notice the door panels that interplay Gold stitched tuck and roll vinyl with warm cream vinyl and thin chrome strips as delineations. Rich-looking shiny cranks and the paddle actuator in the front of the armrest complete the package. Get in, and you're back in the sixties with your pocket protector in a short-sleeved white shirt. You are surrounded by chrome and the coolest retro seat coverings in time! The stitched seats with metal thread in gold tuck and roll vertical and square pattern for the seats in the front and backs in broadcloth. A thinner tuck and roll broadcloth in Gold makes a statement on the tops. Suddenly, you are sitting where you deserve to be after all your hard work. These gold panels break up the warm cream vinyl with just enough width to add interest. On the center of these "stripes" is a thin gold vinyl piece to break it up as a well-designed statement. The dash consists of a large and commanding two-tone plastic cream and gold steering wheel. The speedometer is well laid out with a gauge arrangement comprised of a fantastic, clear typeface selection that makes my designer eye salivate. All gauges are rimmed in a brushed aluminum field, with low original miles on the odometer, and just below a lineup of round-visored chrome bezel gauges. The superb chrome array continues below the gauges with a curved inward ribbed chrome background panel housing the ignition, and a lineup of 60's style pulls and knobs. All this is mounted in a gold metal-shaped dash front. The chrome and ribbed curved action continues as we move across the dash to the temp sliders, radio, and clock, all within more vertical ribbed chrome, and finally to the glove box with ....you guessed it, vertical ribbed chrome and a metal gold painted bottom and that just the door. The floors have clean gold carpeting, the headliner is a tight, warm white stitched broadcloth, and the original floor mats complete the picture!DrivetrainUnder that long hood sits an original unrestored low mileage 390ci V8. It has a 2-barrel carburetor and a Cruise-O-Matic multi-range 3-speed automatic transmission. The rear axle is a Ford 9-inch with 3.50 gears. Stock-style single exhaust is noted, and a giant circular gold-painted small snout air cleaner covers the top of this original mill.UndercarriageHere, we see some surface rust and a slight peel-off of the undercoating. A rebuilt fuel tank is on, and the floor pans and rockers are structurally sound. Some road dirt has embedded itself in the suspension, which includes front independent coil springs and rear leaf springs. Drum brakes are all around.3-1963W-Wayne, IN Assy Plant62-Monterey CustomY-390ci V8 2bbl547510-Sequential Unit Number
