1950 Mercury Custom chopped lead sled. Previous owner is listed in the Nascar Hall of Fame Record Book. The history of his racing career and a copy of his original title of ownership will be included. I own this car. Car is in my name. Paperwork is clear.
The work:A previous complete frame off build, this is a real work of art chopped lead sled. Doors open and close perfectly with perfect body lines. The front begins with a pancaked hood with louvers. The corners were rounded off to flow with the 1953 Buick headlights grafted in the Mercury fenders and frenched. You can google all day and see a lot of chop top Mercury's with frenched headlights but not many done with the 53 treatments. This was the era of great customs. The grill is all handmade. The drip rails were removed. The rear window lays forward with the trunk rolling between Lincoln frenched tail lights. The windows are all glass and black tint gives this a sinister look. They roll up and down perfectly. Wing windows do work and the spotlights are real police vintage spots. They both work but are not wired up. The door handles were removed and work off a button under the front wheel lips. One for each side. No worries of any intruders as there is a key lock under the drivers lip near the popper which locks both doors. The trunk was shaved and works off a hydraulic ram with a power window switch on the driver side rear seat side panel. I disconnected the ram as I was worried of any issues getting in once closed. The trunk lid is a gravity shut and does not bounce or rattle as it is heavy. Gas door was shaved and the gas receiver is under the trunk lid.
The Motor:Under the hood of this custom sled lays a truly traditional Mercury flathead. The motor was reworked & has Edelbrock Heads and Edelbrock tri power intake. All new and the carbs all work. This does not just run off the center carb like you see often. Headers breathe through complete dual exhaust all the way back. Running through smithy's mufflers for unmistakable traditional sound. Brand new Beehive oil filter ready to be plumbed in. Not needed but has the look. The flatty has a mallory updated ignition as all the wiring was upgraded to Ron Francis and a chrome 12 volt alternator. Sitting behind the motor in the firewall are spare monitoring gauges just as they did in the 1950's. The radiator has an electric cooling fan which runs automatic or by internal switch. This motor will run 195 to 198 without the fan on a hot summer day. The best part is this Flathead is backed by a C4 automatic transmission mated to a Ford nine inch rear. So cruising speed is easy and if you desired a 351 v8 down the road this would be an easy transplant. The stance:This Mercury has a static drop and all suspension is Mercury. Has dual air assist in the rear two shocks per side. All the suspension is up to date and has 4 wheel drum brakes. Brakes are all new and up to date as well. The car was a frame off when built. There are no patches, no rot, no holes. One the cleanest customs of an era I've seen in a long time. The lake pipes are for show. As mentioned, under each wheel lip is a door popper and a key lock. Jump buds located on driver side. Rolling on coker wide whites with Caddy hubcaps.
Additional work completed:The previous owner relocated the battery to the trunk. The trunk houses a hidden fuel cell with race fittings and lines to an electric fuel pump. Would have to expect some elements of a previous race car driver. The original gas tank is still in it's stock location so it can be changed back. The trunk is fully detailed to match the interior & has a master battery shut off as seen in pictures and a second shut off up front as well.
The interior:Setting off the look of this Mercury is the 1964 Thunderbird interior. The seats are Tuck and Roll pleated red and white with the color combination running down the door cards and the headliner. It retains its Mercury dash with updated gauges. A tilt Ididit Steering column and a tall lokar shifter for the automatic trans. The center console is handmade and houses extra switches such as headlights, fan, etc. The car does have heat and wipers and they work. In the glove box is a custom stereo which needs completing. Wires ran to front speakers, door tweeters and rear speakers. What's needed is it's set up for an amp- the wires terminate in the trunk. I never cared if I had a radio or not but a nice setup is in there for the finishing.
The Goods: Videos on youtube under radrodsbycarrero, here is one link to get you there. There are 14 videos of the car -click see all. Walk arounds, starting, doors opening and closing. A lot of nice close ups, car driving away, coming at you, plenty to see.

Notes to mention: This is a special car. I see 1949 and 51's all day but the icon is the 50. The car has a great history being tied to a racer and the history of his life will be included with proof of his previous ownership. I encourage anyone to find a pristine 50 and do a frame off. Take the custom done to this car and try to assign how many hours and cost of labor a respectable shop would charge today. I am open to fair offers, not games. I'm considering a different ride at this time. Something along the lines of a willys coupe. A 55 Belair or blown street friendly muscle. No junk, nothing low end. This is the only reason for the sale. I have the right to end this auction due to the vehicle being offered locally.
