1991 Mercury Capri XR2
THIS CAR NEEDS A COUPLE THINGS - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY.
We bought this Capri XR2 from our neighbors to teach our son how to drive a manual transmission. The car had been sitting, and we tuned it up and got it ready to drive. It's a great running & driving car but needs some work to be a daily driver. It is currently on PNO (Planned Non Operation) status in California and has not been registered since 2015.
The Good:The turbo spools nicely, and the engine runs smooth and quiet. The transmission shifts great through all gears. A/C is blowing cold and heat is hot. The convertible top and back window are relatively new and in great shape. The top folds nicely and the tonneau cover works correctly. Power windows and locks work fine. All instrumentation works correctly. Radio works correctly but beware it will probably eat your tape if you try to play one. Car is absolutely rust free; it is an original CA car since new and has been in the same 25 mile radius since it was first sold (Brea, California area). Aftermarket ARE 15" alloy wheels with locking caps. Lots of new parts - see below.
The Bad:The car does not have 396,000 miles - sometime around 200k the sixth digit rolled with the rest. The CARFAX gives an idea of actual mileage, which is around 296k. After we began driving it, the car started leaking oil. It appears to be coming from the front of the timing cover or one of the cam seals. It needs to get fixed, as it leaves a small puddle after each drive. Windshield wipers seem to work intermittently--we think it is the turn signal stalk switch. The paint is old and in marginal condition with lots of chips, scratches, and dings. The clearcoat is bubbling in a couple places and the paint is cracked up on the spoiler. There's also some paint crazing on the front bumper - please look carefully at the photos. The new catalyst is an EPA-spec unit that will not meet CA smog requirements so if you plan to register this car in California, it will need to have a different catalyst installed.
