1969 Mercury Grand Marquis
Please read all of this prior to placing a bid.Offered for sale today is a beautiful 1969 Mercury Marquis Convertible. This rare car (only 2,319 were built that year) is in very original condition. It sports the optional 429 4BBL Series 385 V8 with 360hp/480 torque, mated to a 3 speed, heavy duty C-6 automatic transmission. It has it's original AM in-dash radio with 8 track tape player. The car has air conditioning and power everything. This was a luxury convertible in it's day. The photos speak for themselves. It is my opinion that the posted mileage of 31,828 represents 131,828 actual miles (i,e; only one rollover of the odometer). The engine runs very strong and clearly has a lot of life left in it. The overall solid, original condition of the car speaks to this as well.
It's wearing a second coat of paint (in the original blue) that was sprayed decades ago and is faded as you can see in the photos, but still very presentable. Lots of work has been done on the car. I replaced the gigantic (and power hungry) original starter motor with a high torque mini starter. The car has a new battery, starter relay and radiator. It has new points, rotor, cap, plugs and 5 quarts of Castrol with ZDDP additive to protect the camshaft and lifters. New Coker wide whitewalls and chrome moon wheels have been installed. The original 4BBL carburetor has been rebuilt and the car runs sweet. The brakes work like they should and the car drives like you're floating on a cloud as you roll down the road. It has a new, white convertible top. In the photos you'll notice that a chrome "tooth" is missing from both the center and right hand (passenger) tail light housings. I hunted down and bought a complete set of tail light housings to replace these, that are in used, but good condition, with none of the "teeth" missing (I don't know what else to call the chrome strips that vertically run the length of the lenses). These replacement lenses are included with the sale of the car (see photos). They are very difficult to find and they weren't cheap!
I bought this car for my wife as a project. This is a car that, with a little work, could just be repainted and enjoyed (or leave the paint as is if you're a "patina" person). It has no rot or rust to speak of. We are now in a position where we need to sell it.
This car sat for some time and given it's age, it needs a few things serviced. The convertible top lift is electric/hydraulic. The hydraulic motor works when you push the switch but the actuator rams have leaked out the fluid and need to be replaced (or rebuilt with new o-rings) and the system refilled. The top can be lowered and raised manually by 2 people. The car has power windows. The driver's window goes up and down just fine. The passenger side goes up and down but sticks halfway down. The two rear window regulators do not work. The column mounted neutral safety switch either needs adjustment or replacement and I have not gotten to it. The car starts right up, but typically the gear selector lever needs to be pushed all the way over to the left (Park) and held there when you turn the key. The car can be driven but I would not choose to take the car on a long distance drive in order to bring it home if you buy it. As stated above, the original carburetor has been rebuilt and it works pretty well. But it is a 54 year old carburetor. While all carburetors are obsolete in this day and age, If I were keeping this car, for driveability's sake, i'd replace it with one of the much better aftermarket replacements, like an Edelbrock AVS II.
I have done my best to represent this car as accurately as possible but this being said, this car is being sold in AS-IS condition.
I will not make shipping arrangements for anyone. Period. That being said, I will work with you if you want to contract with someone to come pick up the car. Overseas bidders are welcome (again, YOU will arrange for the car to be picked up and shipped) and having previously sold a car to an overseas buyer (a restorer) I am willing to work with you if you wish have restoration parts shipped here and have the car filled with said restoration parts prior to having the car picked up (in order to save on import duty and fees). The car will be paid for before it leaves my possession.
There is no reserve on this auction. Bid with the confidence that you are buying a truly sweet classic American car.
