1956 Mercury Monterey HOT ROD CRUISER LEADSLED

Fifties flavor ’56 Mercury Monterey hardtop powered by the original 312 c.i. ‘Y’ block rated at 210 h.p. and backed by the 3-speed “Merc-o-Matic” automatic transmission. Actual mileage is 80,000.

Paint, bodywork, and upholstery were done approximately 10 years and two owners ago. Age has started to take its toll on the exterior and ‘bubbling’ is apparent in both rear quarters, top, hood, and lower rocker panels (see photos). In ‘layman’s’ terms “it is a good 15-footer”.

Frame and mounting brackets all seem good. There is some rust starting on the front cross member but has not gone through. Underneath the floors in the interior appear solid.

Interior upholstery, carpeting, and headliner are in excellent condition. The trunk was treated to upholstered side panels and carpeting too.

The exterior glass is in good condition except for a small crack on the driver’s side window (see photo). Exterior chrome ranges from good (rear bumper) to ‘pitted’ (like the door handles), but over all it is a good cruiser.

Recently the Merc had an aluminum radiator w/electric fan installed along with new rear springs & shackles, and the transmission was serviced.

Original 4-barrel carburetor was replaced with a 550 cfm Edelbrock so it starts easily and runs smoothly. The ‘Smitty’ style mufflers and dual exhaust give the Merc a true ‘50’s sound.

All the exterior lights function normally (turn signals, high beams, brake lights) as well as the electric wipers. The interior factory fuel and temperature gauges do not work so aftermarket items were installed along with an oil pressure gauge. The Mercury holds 55 psi at 40 mph. Speedometer and odometer work, but the clock does not.
