Up for a NO RESERVE auction is a beautiful Grecian Gold 1968 Mercury Cougar XR7 GT with a factory S code 390cid V8. This Cougar XR7 GT 2-door hardtop is a true California Barn find having been stored in a giant building for over 4 decades. This is an original California car built at Ford’s San Jose assembly plant just 34 miles away for where it has been parked since 1979. This Grecian Gold /Nugget Gold was a special factory order scheduled for build on 2/7/68 from Oakland (District Sales office) DSO #53 for Fremont Motors the Mercury Cougar dealer in Fremont just 14 miles up the road from the factory. This loaded up XR7 GT with the S-code big block 390 with a C-6 and a 2.75 rear axle and was owned by a secretary of the current owner’s father. Back in about 1978 or 1979 her son took the car and spun it out damaging the right rear quarter panel. The woman was always afraid of the power of this Cougar and after her sons misfortune she made an offer to her boss who bought the car and added it to his large 300 plus automobile collection. The car was parked in his building and has not seen the light of day since 1979 over 40 years ago.
This car was on the road for only 11 years from 1968-1979 and is a real California Barn find hat would be difficult to duplicate. Being that it was special ordered in California, Built in California sold new in California and has never traveled more than a 34 mile radius from where it was born and has been indoors for over 4 decades. Comes with a Marti Report
Cosmetically this cougar is in decent original shape for 52 year old car. The major flaws are the obvious damage that was incurred by the original owners son back in 1979. However due to the indoor dry storage for the majority of it does not have rust, meaning what you see is what you get there will be no more hidden body rust repairs needed for this gem. The Grecian Gold paint is original and dull. The cars vinyl top will need to be replaced. All of the chrome bumpers and emblems are intact and complete. The car still has the vintage Goodyear Polyglass tires on it.
Step inside and the interior of the car is in fair but complete original condition. The Nugget Gold leather seats need to be reupholstered in the front but the rear remain in decent condition. The rear door panels are in great shape, the fronts are complete but in need of a strong cleanse. The wood panel dash is in great shape as well as the console. The steering wheel is in good shape as well. The carpet is complete with no holes. The headliner is complete and in great shape with no tears. Overall some attention will be needed to the fronts seats but otherwise the interior is in great shape for 52 years old and could be left original.
The heart of the Cougar is whats makes this cat worth reviving. Being special ordered with a 390cid4v v8 motor and a c6 transmission this cat has some factory muscle. The motor is complete and original with the original chrome " Ford" valve covers and chrome air cleaner cover. The car ran great 41 years ago. After sitting for over 4 decades the motor should have the fluids changed, carb cleaned, fresh gas and she should roar to life. After all this is not a wimpy 302 or even a 351 Cleveland this is monster 390 and well worth reviving. This cougar is the fancier version of another 1968 car made famous by Steve Mcqueen in a little known film named "Bullit". Steve's green 1968 Mustang GT was also a 390 car and being Mercury was the upscale subsidiary of Ford a Cougar and Mustang share the same platform. How many of the 390 cars exsit today that havnt had the original 390 wrecked or swapped out? The fact this one is complete and original to the car makes this a prime candidate for a restoration to have a badass car when finished.
