Up for auction is anabsolutely beautiful example of an all original, unrestored A Code 1967 Mercury Cougar with factory r-speed. This car has been in indoor storage for the past 25+ years. The Cougar retains its original 289 225HP engine with theoriginalAutolite 4 barrel carburetor mated to the factory Top Loader 4 speed transmission. Thefactory driver's door jambdata plate reads as follows; BODY: 65A COLOR: I TRIM: 2A DATE: 21L D.S.O:51 AXLE: 1 TRANS: 5. The vin number is 7F91A529571. The vin and the data codes indicate that this Cougar was built in Dearborn,Michigan on November 21,1967 for the sales district of Denver, CO. It is optioned with Lime Metallic paint, black interior, 3.00:1 rear axle ratio and a 4 speed transmission.
The interior of this Cougar is in incredible condition for it's age. The passenger seat, drivers seat and rear seats are virtually flawless. The headliner and sun visors are perfect without any deterioration of the factory stitching. The door panels and rear passenger side panels are in excellent condition. The dash pad is not cracked and allgauges are free of any damage or major sun fading. The original carpets are in absolutely beautiful condition, they are completely free of any major wear or tearing and the heel pad is still in excellentcondition. The centerconsole is damage free and the original shifter with reverse lockout is free of any major pitting. The original radio and speakers remain with the car, but an aftermarket 1980s unit is currently installed. All of the light, bulbs and gauges work except for the clock. All of the glass is in excellent condition. The car still has it's original factory door edge guards. Theoriginal trunk liner remains in the car in great shape along with the original spare tire and jack.
The body of this car is remarkably straight without any major body damage or panel misalignments. Other than a few small door dings, thebody of this Cougar is essentially perfect. The paint shows incredibly well with a very nice shine, but it does have some patina from its 52 years of life. It was covered in a carport at some point and the wind buffeting of the cover wore the paint down to the primer on the hood, roof and trunk. The paint is 100% original aside from the rear deck lid andpassenger rear fender extension, which appear to have beenrepainted many years ago. Thefactory originalpinstripe still remains on the car and iscompletely untouched. All of the trim on this car, including the bumpers, headlight covers and reartaillight housings are in great original condition without any major pitting. The undercarriage is very clean and rust free aside from two smallareas in the front floor pan region (not the actual floor but a secondary outer skin) where somefactory rubber grommet plugs are located to access the seat bolts as shown. The passenger side of the floor pan where it meets theinner rocker is alsoshowing some scaling. The trunk floor has similar minor rust near one of the existing grommet holes, but is not as severe. The only other rust to be found on this car is at thebottom front corner of the driver's door, and one very small, almostunnoticeable area on thepassenger side of the cowl. Overall, this car is very rust free incomparison to other originalexamples of Cougars from this era. With a repaint and blend of the hood, roof, trunk and all four fender extensions the car would be absolutely beautiful!
Mechanically, this Cougar is verywell sorted andperforms well. The originalAutolite 4 barrel carburetor, part number C7DFL, has just been rebuilt. A new fuel tank along with a newsending unit have just been installed. It has a brand new factory correct radiator. The drum brakes have just been serviced with new wheel cylinders and new front rubber brake lines along with a new master cylinder. Theclutch engagessmoothly and the 4 speed transmission does notgrind or pop out of gear under acceleration. Thesequential rear taillight mechanism has been replaced with a more modern electronic unit, but the original unit will be included in the sale. The car is fitted with 15" Cragar wheels wrapped in BFGoodrich radials withexcellent tread.
This car is likely one of the most original, unmolested first generation Cougars left in existenceand is a true time capsule.
