Description:

1949 Mercury 72

The Old Oregon Motor Company presents: 1949 Mercury 72 Lead Sled. Deep Maroon/Maroon and White interior. The previous owner acquired this car in 1979 and it remained in storage until the year 2000 when work commenced on this stunning show car. As a cost-no-object labor of love, the work was not completed until 2013. The work began by stripping the car to bare metal and chopping the roof 2" at the "B" pillar. The rake of the "A" pillar was not changed but the shape of the "C" pillar had to be carefully lowered and layered forward. All corners of the hood, doors, and trunk were rounded...and the head and tail lights were frenched. The drive line tunnel was modified for clearance and the floor boards were replaced. The body seams have been welded and the body has been sealed with epoxy primer. The grille is a 1954 Ford unit that has been narrowed and "V'ed" to match the contour of the hood. The front bumper was built from four different bumpers and "V'ed" as well. The rear bumper is narrowed with a 1955 Pontiac over-rider bar. The inside of the body was sprayed with "Lizard Skin" insulation as well as "Dyna-Mat" insulation. Finally, the paint was mixed and applied...a 1940 Ford Maroon color with Black added. Underneath, the frame was powder-coated and "C" notched at the rear. The "A" arms were shortened 2" and the car has power-assisted disc brakes in the front and drums in the rear. There are sway bars front and rear along with a power-assisted Borgeson Mustang steering box. The chassis was completed with a RideTech "Shock Wave" air suspension front and rear. Under the hood is a rebuilt Ford 351C motor with Kal Kustom valve covers, Cadillac-style air clearer, polished AC pump, polished alternator, polished overflow tank, polished power steering reservoir, a custom air deflector cover in front of the radiator, and a custom made fan shroud. Also rebuilt are the Ford automatic overdrive transmission and a Ford 9" rear end. Inside are power window, door, and trunk releases. The trunk release, along with the air-ride control and under-hood light switches are hidden behind a touch-release panel in the dash. The stereo/CD player is hidden in the glove box. The climate controls are hidden behind a panel where the factory ash tray was located. Seats match the door panels and headliner. Upon completion, the new car was christened "Lola" and hit the show circuit. She won the "King of Kustoms" award at the Portland Roadster Show. She then received a "Kustom d"Elegance" award from John D'Agostino and participated in that class at the Sacramento Autorama. She also won the "Kool Kustoms" award at the Good Guys Pleasanton, CA meeting. The car has traveled only about 200 miles since completion. Over $150K and 13 years of work was invested in this one-of-a-kind award-winning Mercury Lead Sled. Please take note: This car is located in Indio, CA. Showings are by appointment only. About Us The Old Oregon Motor Co. takes its name from the original Oregon Motor Company, a Ford dealership established in Portland in 1904. In 1916, the company moved into their permanent showroom located downtown at NW 8th Ave. and Davis Street. Today, the building is an art gallery and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Unlike its namesake, The Old Oregon Motor Co. does not have a retail location but rather is virtual in nature. Our cars can often be found on eBay under our user ID oregonmotorcompany. If you wish to view our inventory in person, showings are by appointment only. Our proprietor, Bill Penny, has been selling classic cars for over 30 years. He has worked as a salesman for some of the most prestigious dealerships on the West Coast. They include The Chequered Flag of Beverly Hills, Silicon Valley Auto Group, the Imperial Palace Auto Collection, Northwest Investment Cars, and Monte Shelton Motor Company. He also has been employed by Keith Martin's Sports Car Market magazine. The Old Oregon Motor Co. was established on January 1st, 2011 and is licensed, bonded, and insured in the State of Oregon under dealer's license number DA 3528. Below is a photo of the original Oregon Motor Company showroom of 1916 as it appears today with the Overland building behind it. Note the faded Overland signage on the defunct auto elevator shaft.
