Description:
1963 Mercury Comet
1963 Mercury Comet S22 Sport. 6 cylinder engine, re-built roughly 5 years ago. Cosmetically its in great shape. Mechanically its in fair to average shape. Structurally its in poor shape, but has been reinforced and is indefinitely stable and drivable. The car runs very well and is clearly a driver - not a show car. The electrical is intact (although radio doesn't work). The soft top motor works well. I restored the interior (including new door panels), and replaced the soft top and carpet. I restored and painted the rusted areas of the body (photos show the areas I restored). The car looks great and runs well. The bad: I purchased this car about a year ago - and was unaware that the subframe had seriously deteriorated with areas of the floor rusted out, rocker panels had rusted away - seriously diminishing the car's stability and strength - the bottom looks rough even now, however I had the floor pans patched and added subframe connectors to ensure the car is stable and strong. The driver's side door is misaligned - it shuts tight and opens, but is not flush with the frame. This is due to some misalignment while the subframe connectors were being welded. There is still considerable rust and deteriorated metal on the bottom - although I have had the interior floor and bottom rhino-coated. Mechanically, the engine is in great shape - but the transmission has some leaks. I have been adding about 1/2 quart of fluid every few weeks - but it's something to consider. The car is an automatic 2 speed and shifts/drives well - but correcting the leaks may require a re-build. Or you do what I have been doing and just add fluid every now and again. It's missing the accelerator pedal. I have one on order - but frankly driving on the arm has been surprisingly easy....Bottom line is this is a reliable car to use as a driver - indefinitely. But will need serious work if you want to restore it to factory condition. I am happy to answer questions. I want to make sure that a buyer is aware of all issues before a purchase.Vehicle Details:
