1946 Mercury Eight Sedan Coupe

"More of everything you want with Mercury” 1946 Advertisement Slogan

Mercury was founded by Edsel Ford in 1939 as an entry-level luxury brand, traditionally positioned and marketed between Ford and Lincoln.

In 1945 the Lincoln-Mercury division was founded to place Mercury and Lincoln together in the upper class segment, though still based on Ford platforms.

The 46 models were a beautiful design with detailed art-deco treatment, especially in grill and dashboard.

This very nice 1946 Mercury 5 window Sedan Coupe was restored several years ago and remains in good condition throughout. The engine appears to be a original model 59 with 239 cubic inch displacement and runs great. The true dual exhaust with skinny resonators give it a nice sound without being too loud. The original 3- speedcolumn shiftmanual transmission operates smoothly and the clutch is good.

Paint, chrome, glass, etc. are in nice shape. All gauges are in working order and windshield wiper and heater blower operate. Factoy Radio powers up but tuner does not work. All running lights are operational. Brake master cylinder has been recently replaced and the period correct wide-whitewall bias-ply tires are older but in great condition and give the car that classic look.

Interior is done in gray cloth much like the original. It is very presentable with some minor wear and tear. Largest flaw is driver's seat back top corner shown in pictures. Some of the interior pictures were taken before the replacement horn ring was installed, but there is a pic with the new ring showing. Rear side windows are push out style, and quarter windows are crank.

All shock absorbers were converted from the old knee-action (houdaille rotary) shocks to modern tube-style shock absorbers.A new original 6 volt battery was recently replaced as well as the voltage regulator. You can drive this Mercury any day anywhere. No rust, no evidence of collision damage, solid body throughout and mechanically sound.

An unusual 5 Window Coupe and quickly appreciating classic, this Mercury is a affordable driver quality restoration of a iconic Ford/Mercury body style. A great turn key car for the purist, or a perfect start for a hot rod build.
