Before we tell you about this awesome 1950 Mercury Convertible we would like to tell you a little bit about how it became a part of our collection. In 2004 we received a call from a close friend who informed us that his estranged brothers wife (follow me here) contacted him and informed him that his brother was ill and she needed to start selling off his cars. Having not spoken for many years, our friend asked us to join him on his visit to see his brother in Fort Morgan, Colorado. To eveyones amazement we found one of the largest collections of Mercurys we have seen or heard of. We had the pick of the litter in terms of what was there (Over 50 cars). This 1950 Convertible was without a doubt a must have car, as it was one of Jim's favorites and so well cared for. Used as a Sunday church driver this car sat in a climate controlled garage and only hit the roads on nice days up until 2002 when it was parked. This car was meticulously restored sometime in the early 90's. Since we purchased the car it has been a part of our private collection where it sat amongst other collector cars in our space in Chicago. Jim passed not long after and we decided to hold onto this car until recently. We are finally finishing up the other car we purchased from Jim's collection (a 1951 Mercury Monterey) and we are going to need a spot in our showroom. Sad to see this beauty go but we are hopeful we can find it a good home.

A freshly restored 1950 Mercury Convertible just like this was sold at RM Auctions in 2012 for $176,000 http://www.rmauctions.com/lots/lot.cfm?lot_id=1049783

1 of only 8,341 Mercury Convertibles in 1950 this gorgeous example is finished in its correct Dune Beige (code 09) over a deep red interior. This car is truly one that needs to be appreciated in person. The paint work is extremely nice and in show quality. The chrome, stainless, bright work show in top condition free of pitting or damage. The car is as solid as we have seen especially in all jambs and sills. The convertible top is original and still in great condition. We do note that the right rear window is slow to go up and down and needs a helping hand. If you are looking for the absolute perfect patina, look no further. This time capsule has enough patina to make any collector salivate. One look under the hood shows perfect aging on parts like the radiator, oil bath filter, and cylinder heads.

This car is as straight as an arrow. The body lines are incredible. All panels are straight and true and the panel gaps are correct. No door sag or bumper misalignment. The jambs are super dry and solid as you can see in our pictures. The rockers still have their louvered drains so they appear to be original and bondo free. We notice some usual light chips around where the hood meets the front edge of the fender and up by the cowl. This is normal from the shear size of the hood and how flimsy the higes were. There is nothing to hide on the this car and we encourage you to come see it in person.

Inward the interior is nearly flawless. The carpets, seats, switches, and dash all show in top condition. Power windows came standard on the convertible along with a power convertible top. The hydraulic windows and top are still original and functional. We note that the passenger window sometimes gets 'confused' when trying to lower but this should be an easy adjustment. This example was loaded up with all the additional options including a power seat, in dash radio, heater, whitewall tires, over-drive, and an oil bath air filter.

Under the hood sits the cast iron block, L-Head V-8 that put out an impressive 110HP. The flat head was backed by a 3 speed manual transmission and the rare optional over-drive. Our '50 Merc has been well maintained over the 10+ years we have owned it and is kept in excellent running and driving condition. It fires right up, still on its 6 volt system. It idles nice and smooth and rev up without hesitation. It shifts through all gears without grinding and stops nice and straight. We added some subtle glass-pacs to let the v8 make some noise and it sounds incredible.

As you can see the underside looks like a time capsule. All rails are straight and dry as are the pans, rockers, mounting points, etc...
