ABOUT THIS 1987 MERCEDES 560SL
We are regularly asked to locate very well maintained "honest", ll original low mileage examples of the desirable Mercedes SL cars, specially the Mercedes 1987-1989 ("107" cars)Mercedes 560SL, he "SL" (Sports Luxury) that many consider the "Best of the Best" in the class of Mercedes two-seaters. Frankly, any of the "SL" cars on the market today are not cars that we would consider worthy of consideration for our customers that are looking for high quality, re-owned Mercedes convertibles. Unfortunately, ore often than not the available "SL" cars have very high mileage, ave not received the necessary maintenance, nd have not been serviced by the Mercedes Benz dealer or qualified technicians. That is certainly not the case with this particular "SL" (more on that later).
While many of these cars are offered at "reasonable" prices, he cars often have mechanical issues due to lack of attention by qualified technicians that can result in significant future expenditures; sometimes even in excess of the initial purchase price of the vehicle. We have learned from experience that well maintained "SL" cars can be extremely reliable and provide years of enjoyment and can be acquired at slightly more than those so-called "bargain" cars. It is also important to note that the later 560SL models did not have the poorly designed single timing chain that existed on earlier Mercedes SL (380 SL's) cars that could result in catastrophic engine damage should the timing chain fail.
This Mercedes is, imply stated, ne of the nicest examples of a pre-owned Mercedes SL car that we have ever had the pleasure of representing. The car was sold by Classic Cars Ltd. to its current owner several years ago as a gift from her recently retired husband. At the time, he car came to us from a local customer who purchased the car from its original owner when it had only 49,000 miles. Over the course of several years, e added another approximately 20,000 miles to the car that he and his wife enjoyed for weekend trips and an occasional ride to the golf course on a sunny day. Now, e are pleased to offer the car to our Mercedes aficionados as a result of another set of unique circumstances.
Since we sold the car in 2010, nly 6,000 miles have been added to the cars odometer! Perhaps most important, he car received regular, ngoing maintenance by the same expert Mercedes specialist who cared for the car previously, ever by a "home mechanic", r inexperienced repair facility. Within approximately 5,000 miles the car has received new chrome wheels, he highest quality Bridgestone tires and maintenance (outlined in detail under "Mechanical Condition" below) by qualified European / Mercedes technicians.
This particular Mercedes will be of interest to a buyer that is looking for an original, otally stock and extremely well maintained example of an SL. The 560SL was delivered locally when new and has had limited ownership. It is offered with a completely clean Car Fax that supports the ownership history along with the cars clean history relative to accidents, heft, dometer rollback, lood, nd other negative "activity."
Perhaps most important is the history of repairs / maintenance on this particular Mercedes 560SL. The owners of the Mercedes, ncluding the current owner, as a VERY particular owner, nd has maintained the Mercedes to the highest standards in order to ensure reliability and great appearance at all times. The Mercedes was used as a weekend car and received limited but regular use to ensure that it was in 100% operational condition at all times. The Service Booklet documents the Mercedes repair history in great detail and it received EVERY required maintenance service at the MBZ dealer, n time. The 560SL reflects service by the authorized MBZ dealer through 57,798 in addition to subsequent documented and extensive ongoing maintenance. The 560SL has traveled an average of under 2,750 miles per year since new. The car has been used very sparingly but has traveled enough miles to keep the systems operational and fully functional at all times.
The Mercedes will be sold (to California buyers) with a current smog certification and registration that is valid through July, 016.
The 560SL is virtually 100% stock including the original factory hard top that is in beautiful condition. Even the rare (and highly sought after) original Becker radio remains in place and is fully functional. The car retains the stock style Mercedes wheels (with the addition of beautiful chrome finish), he first aid kit, pare wheel/tire, ools and spare tire that appears as if it has never been removed from the car and has the original paper "tag"!
BODY/TRIM/TOP
This 560 SL is a color combination that we find especially appealing on an elegant Mercedes like the 560SL. The combination of "Arctic White" with the contrasting and elegant "Mid-Red" interior is simply brilliant! The Mercedes has the benefit of a new convertible top with a perfectly clear window in addition to a matching white, actory hardtop. The underside (headliner) of the removable hard top is finished with a white headliner that is in virtually perfect condition with no damage or rips. The frame looks wonderful and the top mechanism is easy to operate and fully functional (unlike many older SL cars that we see).
The Mercedes 560SL finish has the luster / brilliance of original, igh quality Mercedes factory paint. The paint is in very good condition and, f course, he Mercedes has always been garaged when not in use. There is no indication or report that the Mercedes has never had any accident history, rame or serious damage of any kind. The car is totally free from any rust both external and, s the undercarriage photos reflect, n the underside, uspension and other components.
The 560SL exterior is truly in marvelous condition including the "bright work", ubber trim and other exterior parts. Additionally, he Mercedes is free from all but the most minor flaws, nd even those require a close, ritical inspection to be noticed. Of course, s nice as it is, he car is over 23 years of age (hard to believe, ut true!) but there are virtually no noticeable imperfections. Any extremely small flaws that are present only add to the patina of originality. Frankly, his car rates as high as any that we have had (and that is well over 30 SL cars!) and both cosmetically and mechanically is truly exceptional. From a strictly cosmetic perspective, e are often asked "Does it look as good in real life as in the photos"? The answer is a resounding YES!
The body is very straight and the sides of the doors are free from even door dings. The body itself is free from dents and other damage. The bumpers are straight, ree from damage, nd the chrome is excellent. Also, nspection of the other exterior parts of the car (emblems, rill, rim, tc.) shows them to be in excellent, riginal condition.
The convertible top on the Mercedes is virtually perfect and a towel has been used to keep the rear window free from scratches and damage. The top raises and folds easily and latches properly. It seals well, lthough this particular car has been used almost exclusively with the top down, r with the hardtop in place. Please pay particular attention to the close up photos of the top. Unlike many SL tops that are full of scratches and even damaged aluminum trim (from taking them on and off improperly), his one is free from that kind of damage. The top operations on the SL cars can be problematic, ut that is not the case with this Mercedes SL.
The doors, ood, nd trunk line up extremely well, ith even gaps, nd close easily and securely. The doors do not sag, nd the hinges are solid and rust free. The undersides of the hood and trunk are free from rust, irt and grease and in excellent condition. The entire engine bay has the original color paint, s does the trunk. The engine has not been cleaned up for the photographs but as a result of ongoing maintenance is clean and free from excessive dirt/grease build-up. The underside of the car is free from any significant oil, rease, ust, r damage.
The glass on the car is free from cracks, r damage. The power windows are fully functional. The front windshield is free from any cracks, stars" or any damage. All of the lenses, ights are free from cracks and damage and 100% functional.
INTERIOR
The interior on this Mercedes is very nice. The driver's side seat is even free from the typical damage that we see on many SL Mercedes cars. There is only one extremely small area of wear (about 1") that shows slight "rubbing" but the seats and other interior parts are totally free from major defects, ears, r rips. The leather is in beautiful condition on all of the seating surfaces.
The driver's seat is structurally very solid and does not sag or appear unsightly in any way. There is no fading on the seats, ash or other interior areas. From the seats to the dash, oor panels and carpeting, verything has been well cared for, r replaced, nd there is little to no wear on virtually every part of the interior of the car. The interior has held up exceptionally well with no significant dash cracks, o seat damage/rips or tears and lovely carpet that is color coordinated with the red leather seats. The wood on the center console and dash is in unusually good condition and free from any cracking, plitting or damage. The remainder of the dash is equally as good. The photos will provide the prospective buyer with an accurate depiction of the quality of the interior including the center console, nstruments, ash, eats, arpet, nd other portions of the interior.
The interior is in its original configuration, ncluding the steering wheel with functional horn, auges, eats, tc. The radio is the stock, actory issued Becker radio. It is unusual to have these units still in place and more often than not, hey are changed with inexpensive, nferior radios. The stock speakers are in place and the power antenna that is functional.
The side door panels are in very good condition and free from the warping and water damage that is often times present on the older Mercedes SL cars. The pockets in the door panels are not damaged. There are no speakers mounted in the door panels. Simply stated, his interior is far superior to many of the similar Mercedes cars that we have had over the years.
The gauges are all 100% functional and display positive readings as can be viewed in the photos with the car running. The monitoring gauges are all original, ith clear lenses, nd are free from cracks and cloudiness. The shift knob is the original. The glove box fits well, nd locks. The ashtray has never been used.
MECHANICAL CONDITON
It is refreshing to see cars that have an extensive and thoroughly documented repair history along with original delivery documents. We agree with our customers that place considerable emphasis on finding a car with this information as it is generally evidence that a car has received excellent maintenance. Well, he service history (as recommended by the Mercedes Benz factory) on this 560SL couldn't be any better. Please refer to the photos to get a feel for the comprehensive service records (history) that will be provided to the car's new owner. Unfortunately time (and space!) do not allow and in depth review of the cars maintenance history. However, e feel it is important to summarize the maintenance history of the car with the Mercedes Benz dealer along with subsequent servicing / maintenance that it received during the past 10,000 miles, r so.
