Solid project car that runs
1975 Mercedes-Benz 240D
Got this in 2022 off of a farmer about 1 1/2 away from me. It was last registered in 1994 before I registered it in my name in Vermont. Stored it over the winter and just pulled out of winter storage on 03/08/2025. Very first picture is from 07/2024 rest of exterior pictures of the 240 D are from 03/08/25. Undercarriage pictures are from 06/2024 when I had the exhaust work done. Selling because I do not drive this enough and would like another parking space open. Only put around 500 miles on her since acquired. In this time period I have replaced the master cylinder, performed a valve adjustment and valve seals. New tires with less than 400 miles. Wheels were painted right before I had the new tires mounted. The original exhaust had a few holes so I had work done to it in 06/24. We were able to save the muffler. Needless to say, there are not a lot of 50 year old cars that still have the original muffler. Since I don't own a lift, figured it was a good time to take some pictures. At that time we discovered the hose coming from the tank needed to be replaced, as it was leaking (wet gas tank in pics.) Hose was replaced with OEM tapered hose and it no longer leaks. Although I think the solidity of my car is about as good as it gets for this part of the country, I will let the pictures do the talking. There was body and paint work done to this car, so I would not label it a true survivor. From the clues as the driver's fender being a different color at some point, rust where the inside of hood touches it (pictured),and prior blending on the door I believe the driver's fender was replaced at some point. The undercarriage, trunk, floors look great to me, but you be the judge. I tracked down the family of the original owner and they said he ordered it over the phone in German. Comes with the metal tag stamped from the factory to the man that ordered the car. Odometer works and shows 49xxx. I believe the mileage to be 149xxx from the maintenance notes on the inside of the door, the condition, and knowing that it was off of the road from 1994-2022. I consider this a running/driving/stopping project. This is not a concourse level Mercedes-Benz. It goes down the highway straight and the steering wheel does not shake. Transmission shifts and does not slip. The radio works when it wants to (comes with original non working Becker also). The rear sway bar is disconnected. I have the OEM trunk liner, took out for the pictures. Cannot figure out how to get the A/C to kick on or the blower motor to work, although you can switch between hot and cold with the levers on the dash and feel it. The fog lights are not original and do not turn on. Blinkers work although sometimes you have to hold the stalk up or down depending on what direction you are turning. Although the car runs, stops and drives I would not recommend driving it a long distance home! Longest trip I have taken in it is about 30 miles. It does smoke/burn oil as was shown in the video. I believe it needs the rubber valve seals reinstalled to alleviate that issue. The battery light on the instrument cluster comes on and pulsates. The voltage from the alternator fluctuates (why the light gets bright and dim) and will most like need a new alternator and/or voltage regulator. It does not overheat and hasn't overheated while I've owned her. Seat belt buzzer and light sometimes goes off even when buckled. This is a 50 year old Mercedes and I recommend looking at it in person or sending someone to look at it for you, if you are far away. Car is sold as is, with no warranty expressed or implied and no returns. I am in the southern part of St. Louis county, Missouri... NOT the high crime area. Currently insured with a clean Vermont registration/title in my name. Although plates say they expired in 2024, they are valid until 2026 (Vermont no longer stickers antique vehicles.) Cash only on pickup, or wire transfer before pickup. If buying from far away and you are using a shipper, can hold for 7 days, after that $20/storage fee and the driver cannot show up with a weird type of check or money order because I cannot tell the difference in a counterfeit money order from the First National Bank of Arkansas, when I have no idea what a real one looks like or if that bank even exists.
