Vehicle Details
I bought this car in 2014 from a friend of mine as a project to restore. I love diesels and by trade I am a mechanical engineer from Europe. This model was sold in the US only for one year, 1987, as diesel and station wagon. There were only 1,400 sold in USA that year. They all came with defect engine head that was just a matter of time when the head(#14) would crack and coolant would leak into the combustion and create white smoke. It happened to mine. I ended up buying a brand new engine(pictures and receipt) from Metric Motors in LA area. I swapped the engine myself and everything else was done by me in person. The new engine has yhe most recent head, #22, much better design and very quiet. I took very great care in braking in the new engine and as a result today, after aprox. 43k miles on the new engine, there are no leaks of any fluid and not a single drop of oil burned in between oil changes. I installed complete brakes(original mercedes), new michelin tires, new suspension system all around(springs, shocks, bushings, tie rod ends, complete control arm kit Lemforder on all four wheels), rear hydraulic shock(original Sachs, very expensive). There is no cluncking noise at all in the suspension, smooth transmission(serviced fully recently, new filter, new gasked and new ATF), new radiator, new fan clutch, new windshield, new paint job(no previous rust), new headlight switch. New door lock key tumblers, front doors, rear door and ignition switch, same original key cut, ordered by yhe dealer from Germany(over $700). AC blows very cold, new compressor and converted to R134. Dash was replaced with a non cracked used one, and all the air duct vacuum actuators replaced with new ones. All windows are electric and working, front electric seats. Only thing that does not work is the antena, it does not come out or goes in. The sunroof works well and there is no leak. The trim around the windshield is not installed yet and some door outside trim is missing too. I have an extra new painted complete hatch door, a big box full of hard to find spare parts, new gaskets, etc, etc. Most parts were bought at Mercedes dealer, AutohausAZ and Pelican Parts. The car goes 100mph without any hesitation. It does go straight and does not pull to any side. The wheel alignment was done right after new Michelin tires were installed. I do have a new set of Monark injector nozzles that still need to be installed. I installed a new mercedes original rear muffler, new drive shafts, new wheel bearings all around, new vacuum hoses and much more that I can't even remember. It's hard to let go of this car since it has been our companion for many years. The car is ready to go anywhere. Starts right up and loves to go long distances. Ahh, new starter too. Cruise control works perfectly. It does have a weird thing with low and high beam that I did not have time to look into it. The signal stalk is new also. Steering wheel and right mirror are electric and working. I found on ebay from Canada the original advertisement from a magazine. The date on the paper is from December 1986. I hope its readable in the picture.
