Every once in a while I get an opportunity to sell an amazing collector car, one that is in a perfect state of survivor originality. These 560SL’s from the late 80’s have become highly collectable and desirable. They were built back in the “traditional” era of Mercedes Benz, before computer driven systems were put in place. These cars from this era will be on the road long after the computer cars lose their support and end up in the salvage yard along with all the old computers we throw away.

I am helping the 2nd owner couple in San Clemente sell their car. My background with classic automobiles extends for over 40 years. I have built and restored many Porsches, Mercedes Benz & Corvettes and am a member of numerous car clubs including PCA, 356 Registry & NCRS. I have judged at many top concour events in and around Southern CA for the last 25 years. Survivor and preservation cars are my specialty. I do paint restoration on original paint classic cars. This particular example is a stellar, turn-key automobile at the highest-level of originality. This is a solid #1 condition vehicle that needs nothing and runs perfectly. One of the nicest preservation Mercedes Benz’s from this era I have ever put my eyes on. This car is a concours condition survivor. It could easily go to a museum.

This is a Two Owner Southern CA, Mercedes Benz. Both owners are what I would classify as a car “freaks” and masters at keeping a car maintained to perfection. This car does not look like it has ever spent a day of its life out in the light. This Mercedes-Benz was purchased brand new from Johnson Motors (Mercedes Benz) of West Covina, CA on May 7th 1986. Everyday and night of its life has been spent in a garage; very little time out in the sun. It has always been used as a “special” occasion car and never a daily commuter. The original owner was retired in his late 60s when he purchased the car in 1986. He passed three years ago and I was involved in selling the car at that time to the current owners.

The exterior, interior, wheels, trunk, undercarriage and under the hood all look absolutely brand new. There are no dings or scratches of any kind to this gorgeous automobile and zero signs of repaint to any panels. This vehicle is in absolutely flawless condition and needs nothing. There is an extensive book of records proving the mileage to be accurate as well as a recent clean CarFax Report (attached in pictures).

The file of early service records is not available, but records since 2005 are pictured in the photo gallery along with a list of what has been done below in this write-up.

Body & Paint

The Body is simply a 10. The Paint is a 10. Every panel is flawless and original and has NEVER had any paint or body repair. The factory original light orange peel and color matches from panel to panel all the way around the car. You simply will not find a body and paint as perfect as this car. It is almost impossible for me to imagine a car that has lived 34 years on this planet and not been damaged at least once, but it is not a stretch as the owner never used the car as a daily driver. This was simply a weekend, special occasion car.

The chrome as well the exterior rubber and trim is also a 10. The chrome factory wheels are a 9.9 out of 10 and have no abrasions. The imperfections you see in the pictures are just picked up from the surrounding ground reflection on the chrome wheels. The wheels have NO abrasions. The Glass is all original to the car and never been replaced.

The body and paint on this car is as close to “concours” as I have ever seen on a survivor/preservation car from this era. This car would do very well at one of the top concours events in the country with this level of total originality.

This would be a stellar car to present at Mercedes Benz Club events around the Country.

Smoke Silver Metallic was “the” color back in 1986. It is difficult to describe this color, it is not silver and it is not “sand” color, it is somewhere in between depending on the light. It is definitely not the gold color. I really want to call this color a shade of platinum.

The first and second pictures in the picture gallery best represent the true color. They were both taken at the same time, the first picture being taken on the “sunny” side of the car (sun at my back as I took the picture) and the second picture was on the “shaded” side of the car (sun was in my face).

Interior

The interior on this classic roadster is simply as nice as it gets, I would rate it a 9.9 out of 10. The carpets, mats, seats, dash, wood and door panels are all immaculate. You would think it was brand new. The seats are firm and comfortable, just like when they were when new. The leather has no cracked panels, it is supple and has a wonderful feel to the touch. The bolsters have zero wear. The carpets are near perfection. The headliner in the hard top is as new and has barely ever seen the light of day. The hard top has been on this car almost exclusively since it was purchased.

The soft-top is in immaculate condition and has basically always been stored below the hardtop, rarely used. The plastic window was recently professionally cleaned.

Drive-Train

The mechanics on this car are perfect and the engine is smooth and responsive just like the day it was bought. The car has been driven on a regular basis; starting it and driving it occasionally to keep it in top working order. The transmission shifts like it is brand new. The car drives down the road straight and true with no shimmy’s, rattles or problems of any sort. Driving these SL’s from this era is truly fun as they have that old German road feel to them. The ride quality is superb as well it handles like a sports car should.

Over $13K has been invested since 2005 or the last 3000 miles. See the list of items below.

The radio works, the windows work perfectly, the wipers, the cruise control and every single system in this car works like the day it came out of the factory. The AC recently needed a compressor and drier and now blows ice cold.

Undercarriage

The Undercarriage is immaculate and dry. There is no signs of rust or any leaks of any kind. All the suspension parts are like new and work to Mercedes specs. All the original undercoating and painted parts are as they came from the factory.

The car is turnkey, it needs nothing and is ready to go.

If you are looking for one of the finest examples on the planet from the final classic era of Mercedes Benz SL’s, you just found it. These vehicles are just starting to be recognized and have a long way to go in collector value.

If you are in or around Southern CA, please take the time to come and look at this gorgeous automobile.
