A 560SL of 1986 can trace its ancestry back to 1954 and the world championship 300 SLR sports-racing machines which swept all before it on a career that saw it retire undefeated in 1955. The 300 SL and all SL's to follow had their genesis in this immortal “Silver Arrow”.
This 1986 Mercedes-Benz R107 560SL is a fantastic example of one of the most well-known Mercedes models produced and represents an era of engineering and performance that will never be seen again.
Originally sold through Laurel Motors in Westmont, Illinois, it has lived a pampered garage-kept life until being sold to its current owner. The first owner drove it comparatively few miles, buying the car when it debuted in 1986 as a reward to himself and his wife for a successful business anniversary. It has never been driven in any type of inclement weather, like rain or snow, which can be the downfall of most Illinois cars.
The original documentation is included with the car, including the owner’s manual, service and warranty book, the maintenance manual and booklet and other assorted manuals and booklets.
All of the standard features of the 560SL were included with this car, including the auxiliary hard top.
The condition of this car is absolutely original and beautifully preserved. Every facet of the car is exactly as it came from the factory and nearly untouched. The current owner is the second owner from new, and has treated the car in the same manner as the proud first owner.
As seen in the photos, much of the appeal of this 560 comes from the condition and the paint and interior. The Astral silver paint and grey interior are exceedingly elegant and withstands the test of time of color fads and fashions.
BODY:
This 560SL wears its factory correct and original Astral Silver Metallic paint. All of the body panels are ripple, dent, and rust free and have never had any sort of body or accident damage.
The glass and seals are in excellent condition and there are no leaks evident. The windshield is also original and in very nice condition.
The body trim, including the stainless steel, chrome, and rubber, is all in excellent condition. Everything appears to be original. Ribbed side mounted signal lights and wrap around ribbed taillights are designed to be self-cleaning. The shiny grill surround with the large tri-pointed star leads the way, and a chromed bumper with black vinyl side coverings shows in front and rear.
The black soft top has been recently replaced out of necessity, as the original top’s rear window separated from the canvas. The correct top material was sourced and installed by an interior shop known for its concours quality interiors and tops.
A hardtop in body matching Astral Silver Metallic comes with this car and is like new. It is in original and untouched condition, with the original paint, headliner, and trim all present and in stunning condition.
INTERIOR:
The grey leather interior was an option when new has also been the subject of intensive preservation. The seating areas are in beautiful condition along with the door panels, dashboard, and interior trim.
The grey carpet is also original to the car and in excellent overall condition, with very little wear or fading evident. CocoMat floor mats were also recently installed in a complimentary color, adding to the overall elegance of the interior.
All of the accessories, including the air conditioning and radio are in perfect working condition. The original Becker radio is in place and working, having recently been upgraded to accommodate Bluetooth operation with no exterior modification. The power windows also roll up and down and work perfectly.
The trunk is in stunning overall condition, with the trunk covering being in original condition with no missing pieces, and the spare tire, jack, and associated tools accounted for and beautiful.
UNDERCARRIAGE:
The underside of the car is exactly what a low-mile car should look like. A very solid and very well-preserved undercarriage shows very few signs of age, and as you can see from the photos, is very original and corrosion free.
ENGINE and ENGINE COMPARTMENT:
The powerplant in this 560SL is the original 8-cylinder engine. It has 56,000 original miles and has been meticulously cared for throughout its life. It is very well sorted with all maintenance being performed recently. All aspects of the motor are in perfect working order, and the compression ratio on all cylinders is exactly where they should be.
The 5.6 liter alloy, V-8 engine incorporates Bosch D-Jetronic electronic fuel injection and sits in an original condition engine bay. The hydraulically actuated torque converter automatic 4-speed transmission sits behind the V8 and can be used in automatic mode or be shifted manually. On the back is a 2.47 axle.
The engine bay is in original condition, and as delivered from the factory. All components in the engine compartment are in operational condition. Every detail of the engine compartment is “Mercedes-Benz correct” and beautifully presented. It would be difficult to find an engine compartment with a better presentation on an original car.
TRANSMISSION:
The four-speed automatic transmission in this 560 is in perfect working order and functions as a low-mile car should. It is the original transmission to the car.
TIRES, WHEELS, and BRAKES:
The tires on the car are brand new Michelin Defender tires and are nearly new. They are the correct and original size replacement for the 560SL and have the correct load rating. The Michelin tires were chosen because they were the closest exact approximation to the tires installed on the car when new. The original forged alloy wheels can be noted on all 4 corners. They are in beautiful original condition, having never needed any type of re-finishing.
The entire braking system has also been gone through recently to ensure every part works as it should, including installation of new OEM brake pads on all four corners.
UNDERCARRIAGE:
The undercarriage is, as seen in the photos, extremely clean, original, and free from any type of rot. Seen in the photos is a slight age patina on the chassis that draws its design from the Mercedes Benz racing heritage. The factory undercoat is actually still present in many areas. It is one of the cleanest undercarriages of a Mercedes R107 model of this vintage I have seen in a long time.
Recap of recent service:
The following service has been performed to the car within the past 6 months, in preparation for sale:
-The factory radio was removed, rebuilt, and the Bluetooth function was added onto it, without altering the look of the unit.
-Steering box was rebuilt.
-Complete transmission and rear end service was performed.
-Oil and fluid and filter change was performed.
-Valve cover gaskets were replaced.
-Engine and transmission mounts were replaced.
-Center steering link, steering damper, and front lower ball joints were replaced.
-Air conditioning system was re-charged.
OVERALL DRIVING IMPRESSIONS:
This 560SL runs and drives as should – It’s barely broken in. It is rock solid and a pleasure to drive. The 8-cylinder powerplant runs and accelerates smoothly and very quickly and the transmission shifts as it should.
The car drives around town and on the open road with no squeaks, creaks, or rattles. It needs absolutely nothing to drive/show.
