Description:

1988 Mercedes-Benz 300-Series 300E

I am pleased to offer this gorgeous 1988 Mercedes-Benz R124 300E. This 300E is finished in cabernet red metallic exterior with burgundy leather interior (absolutely stunning) and shows 70,000 +/- original miles. It is being offered by the third owner from new.
Chassis Number: WDBEA30D8JA703038
Engine Number: 109576
Manufactured February, 1988
This 1988 Mercedes-Benz R124 300E is a fantastic example of one of the most well-known Mercedes models produced and represents an era of engineering and performance that will never be seen again.
Originally sold through Star Motors in Houston, Texas, it lived most of its life there until being sold to a couple in Illinois in 2007. Once in Illinois, it was always garage kept and driven comparatively few miles, and never in any type of inclement weather, like rain or snow.
All of the original documentation is included with the car, including the window sticker, service and warranty book, the maintenance manual and booklet (which documents all of the service through the majority of the car’s life), owner’s manual, and other assorted manuals and booklets covering the operation of the 300E.
All of the standard features of the 300E were included with this car including the two options which totaled $1,425 when new:
Code 587, Cabernet Red Metallic Paint
Code 277, Burgundy Leather
Code 412, Electric Sliding Sunroof w/Pop-Up
The condition of this car is absolutely original and beautifully preserved. Everything facet of the car is exactly as it came from the factory and nearly untouched. The current owner is the third owner from new, and has treated the car in the same manner as the previous two owners.
As seen in the photos, much of the appeal of this 300E comes from the condition and the paint and interior colors. The dark red paint and burgundy interior is not only extremely rare on this model, but the combination is exceedingly elegant and withstands the test of time of color fads and fashions.
BODY:
This 300E wears its factory correct and original cabernet red metallic paint, All of the body panels and ripple, dent, and rust free and have never had any sort of body or accident damage.
The glass and seals are in excellent condition and there are no leaks evident. The windshield is original and also in very nice condition.
The body trim, including the stainless steel, chrome, and rubber, is all in excellent condition. Everything appears to be original.
INTERIOR:
The dark burgundy leather interior was an option when new has also been the subject of intensive preservation. The seating areas are in beautiful preserved condition, with very little wear evident. The door panels are also in the same condition.
The burgundy carpet is also original to the car and in excellent overall condition, with very little wear or fading evident.
All of the accessories, including the air conditioning and sunroof are in perfect working condition. The original Becker radio is also in place and working. The power windows roll up and down and work perfectly.
The trunk is in stunning overall condition, with the trunk covering being in original condition with no missing pieces, and the spare tire, jack, and associated tools accounted for and beautiful.
UNDERCARRIAGE:
The underside of the car is exactly what a low-mile car should look like. A very solid and very well preserved undercarriage shows very few signs of age, and as you can see from the photos, is very original and corrosion free.
ENGINE and ENGINE COMPARTMENT:
The powerplant in this 300E is the original 6-cylinder engine. It has 70,000 original miles and has been meticulously cared for throughout its life. It is very well sorted with all maintenance being performed recently. All aspects of the motor are in perfect working order, and the compression ratio on all cylinders is exactly where they should be.
The engine bay is in original condition, and as delivered from the factory. All components in the engine compartment are in operational condition. Every detail of the engine compartment is “Mercedes-Benz correct” and beautifully presented. It would be difficult to find an engine compartment with a better presentation on an original car.
TRANSMISSION:
The automatic transmission in this car is in perfect working order and functions as a low mile car should. It is the original transmission to the car.
TIRES, WHEELS, and BRAKES:
The tires on the car are Continental Control Contact tires and are nearly new. They are the correct and original size replacement for the 300E and have the correct load rating. The wheels are in beautiful original condition.
The entire braking system has been gone through recently to ensure every part works as it should.
UNDERCARRIAGE:
The undercarriage is, as seen in the photos, extremely clean, free from any type of rot, and original. The factory undercoat is actually still present in some areas. It is one of the cleanest undercarriages of a Mercedes 124 model of this vintage I have seen in a long time.
OVERALL DRIVING IMPRESSIONS:
This 300E runs and drives as should – It’s barely broken in. It is rock solid and a pleasure to drive. The 6-cylinder powerplant runs and accelerates smoothly and very quickly and the transmission shifts as it should.
The car drives around town and on the open road with no squeaks, creaks, or rattles. It needs absolutely nothing to drive, show, and enjoy. All of the mechanical aspects of the car work as they should.
PLEASE NOTE:
The originality and presentation of the car is what really sets it apart from other 124 models in this period. This 300E still retains all of its original or N.O.S. components. This means the engine, transmission, rear end, etc. are original or correct to the car. All of the numbers, markings, etc., are correct. THIS CAR HAS NEVER BEEN MODIFIED IN ANY WAY. I also have a clean CarFax run in the past month that can be sent to you upon request.
It is an original and very special car that, as evidenced by the low mileage and condition, has been driven very sparingly and properly cared for. If you’ve never owned or driven an R124 model of this period, you are in for a treat with this one!
If you are serious about purchasing this vehicle, I encourage you to come, take a look, and drive it. I can also provide you with additional photos of any specific part you have questions about.
You or your mechanic are also welcome to put the car on a lift, located where the car is stored, and perform any drivetrain inspection you wish, including a compression check.
