One long-time owner who daily drove the car from new in 1967 until retirement in 2001. It was driven sparingly for the next 14 years. In his words, “The car never broke down once”.
I purchased the car in the fall of 2015 in Santa Barbara, CA and it has been my trusty secondary car, living in the garage as I slowly restored it cosmetically as well as mechanically. The 250S has been exercised about once a week in nice weather without a single issue. I use genuine Mercedes-Benz parts and have spared no expense in this minor refurbishment.
The mechanical improvements I’ve made in the past few years includes:
-Rear axle pinion seal and new pinion flange
-Driveshaft center carrier and flex disc
-Complete transmission rebuild and reseal, along with clutch disc, pressure plate, throw-out bearing, all shifter bushings and pilot bearing. I also replaced the clutch slave cylinder and associated steel and rubber lines.Transmission mount was also replaced at this time.
-Engine mounts and shock
-Installed rebuilt brake calipers and new brake hoses, pads, master cylinder and new correct fluid reservoir. Most of the steel brake lines were also replaced. The brake booster was rebuilt in 2016. While the brake work was being performed I degreased and detailed the wheel wells.
-Sourced and painted correct hubcaps and color matched wheels, along with installing the proper trim rings.
-New Weber carburetors. The original Zenith carbs will be included in the sale.
-All new fuel hoses filter and fuel pump
-Mild engine bay cosmetic detail which included painting, plating and coating various engine bay components.
-Replaced every cooling and heater hose (with correct style clamps) along with the thermostat and water pump. New heater control knobs and control cables.
-Installed rebuilt alternator
-New Belts
-Battery
-New ignition tumbler
-New rear left window regulator with associated window channel and brushes
-New right front door hinges
-Installed new correct windshield wipers (Not shown in photos- was done very recently!)
-Religious oil changes (every 6 months, regardless of mileage)and valve adjustments when appropriate
-Spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor and coil. The car had pertronix electronic ignition installed when I purchased it, and it has worked flawlessly.
-New complete exhaust system
Items needing attention/ incorrect items:
-Aftermarket radio. This car was ordered new without a radio, and it currently has an Alpine head unit which was installed in the early 80’s. I have the original dash radio block-off plate which will be included in the sale.
-The seats should have a very unique light grey/blue almost zebra print cloth material with blue mb-tex side bolsters. This was only found on early European market W108s. It still intact underneath the current seat covers but is in very worn condition. The current seat covers were installed in the early 1980’s.
-Speedometer is erratic at times.
-Due to the low boiling point of California gas, it does take a few seconds of cranking to fire when the car has sat with a hot engine over 10 minutes. The gasoline is percolating in the carbs! The solution would be having the exhaust manifolds professionally ceramic coated. I was intending on sending them out to Swain Tech in NY for the White Lightening coating, which reduces the manifold thermal heat 30-50%. Or if you live outside California and have better quality gasoline, this may not be an issue at all!
-The car was painted in 1988 and is fine for a driver. By no means perfect, but presentable.
I honestly never intended on selling the 250S, but I have too many cars and not enough space! I’m open to answering any questions or concerns. Clean and clear California title in my name.
