Description:
1977 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class
You are bidding on a 1977 Mercedes Benz, type R107, 450SL Roadster. She has very low original miles of just 82,186
I purchased her in a three car deal and am keeping only one of the cars, so this and another 1992 Mercedes Benz SL500 are for sale.
I am bullish on SLs of any year, however, the 450SL is coming into it's own. With the original, color coated, hubcaps the 450SL has a vintage look but drives thoroughly modern. The venerable 4.5 V8 engine is a jewel, starts every time and runs well.
She isn't terribly quick, by today's standards, but that isn't the point. The R107's style is timeless. While people are collecting the 560SL model, they overlook the charm of the early 107s. The 450SL does not have a wood console, for example, the steering wheel is huge and, of course, there is no airbag.
SL roughly translates, in German, to sports light. At 3,400 lbs, she wasn't a featherweight. Still fairly hefty, but the later 560SL grew even more portly. Therefore the 450SL is a bit more sporting, but not a sports-car. Call it a GT.
The interior of this 450SL is in fine shape, with no cracks in the dashboard. The seats have been re-skinned at some point and are just ok. The paint looks largely original and the color very attractive.
She comes with a color matching hardtop, but the convertible top is present and appears to have never been used. In other words, in great shape. The plastic rear window is not cloudy.
The car starts, runs and shifts wonderfully and the brakes are up to the task of stopping her (for a 1977). The trunk and engine compartments are in great shape, a testimony to the low mileage.
The tires are decent, however, if I were to keep her I'd put new tires on her.
The windshield is in good, non cracked, condition.
The car has air conditioning. It's winter in Chicago so I have not attempted to engage it - however, she has been in storage for many years and would, at least, need a freon charge.
All of the gauges and dials work properly.
All R107's seem to rust. I've included pictures of the wheel wells and the underside of the car. There is a minimal amount of rust - which can be seen in the pictures. The frame appears to be solid.
I've driven her and noticed an exhaust leak, therefore I ordered a new rear exhaust section and will install it before the winning bidder takes delivery.
She is 50 years. So while a great driver, she is not a show car, but - then again, I am not asking $40,000 for her. I've set the reserve at a modest level. I do not have a "Buy it Now" price. However, the car will sell, I'm sure. That being said, she comes with no warranty. Sold AS-IS. Inspections, by appointment, are encouraged, she is garaged.
I can take additional pictures and attempt to answer all emails promptly. If it takes me a day or two, please be patient.
A $500 deposit it required (not requested, there is a difference) within 48 hours of the close of the auction. Balance in 7 days. The deposit is non refundable so don't bid if you can't or won't agree to the deposit. I report delinquent and non paying buyers. I've described the car to the best of my ability. Your idea of used may differ from mine. The pictures are important to view carefully.
Good Luck Bidding.
