1989 Mercedes-Benz 400-Series RARE AIRBAG DELETE CAR
Some of us know that the best Benz cars are the old ones. This is a wonderful example. This is a US model W126 420 SEL. The exterior is 040 black (the best color) and the interior leather is 264 palomino. It is about an 8 year old repaint, and an incredible job. Interior, glass and trim was obviously out/disassembled, and it has been cut, buffed and polished to a remarkable finish. (I am a Concours participant, Judge, and winner, so I know the difference). Shut lines are perfect all around, and it has the satisfying "thunk" that you want on an old Benz door. It is totally ding free, and I cannot find a scratch or ugly imperfection anywhere. Glass, bumpers, and exterior trim look beautiful too. Wheels look like they just came out of the box, not a mark. Headlight doors are new (from Classic Center, roughly $500), as are wiper blades. Yes, I am about as particular a seller as you will find. I am a 40 year, second generation Benz geek and MBCA member.
The interior looks and smells great too. While we are talking about it, here's what makes this car so rare, at least in my estimation. On the factory window sticker (pictured here), it shows an option code for "Airbag Delete". I have never once seen this in all my Benz travels. You certainly won't ever see it again. Instead of an airbag and that fussy, usually broken center box, it has a proper glovebox. It is a non-smoker, the carpets, rear hat rack and plastic trim are 9.9's. The headliner is as well. The rear speaker grilles are intact (on most cars they are cracked to many pieces) I do not see one mark on the dash, nothing has been mounted on the console or door cards (like so many of them). Steering wheel is beautiful and not nicked, worn, or coming apart. Wood is excellent, with one minor flaw (disclosed below). Front seats have been very gently touched up, rear seat looks like it has rarely, if ever, been used. Tools, jack and spare tire are as they should be. I'm guessing your getting the picture now about the quality. Let me take a minute to tell you about what's been done mechanically to make it just as nice:
New or Recent:MB wiper blades--Correct Bosch Battery--Tranny Bowden cable adjust for perfect shifting--Removed incorrect Hirschman antenna, and replaced with rebuilt factory from Becker ($400!)--Replaced lazy sunroof deflector with new, new springs and new hardware, cleaned and lubed, and fits perfectly--replaced trunk seal for a cut--refinished lower front bumper cover for scratch (removed from the car so no overspray or danger)--re-upholstered seat belt holder tower vinyl--removed and resealed slightly leaky steering gear--4 new Michelins roughly 500 miles ago, with alignment--engine mounts and idle control unit replaced, approx 1k miles ago--AC had been converted to newer style refrigerant, but we changed back to R12, it works so much better in these cars, and has a new compressor, drier, and condensor--new valve cover gaskets new chain, chain tensioner and rails--all new belts--replaced leaky valve cover gaskets---all this is within the last 1000 to 1200 miles. Yes, I have all these receipts. It stays parked on my indoor showroom. I have driven it about 75 miles in the last 6 months.
What's not perfect? Well, frankly, not much. 1. I am missing the correct first aid kit, and have not been able to find one, 2. Passenger outside mirror is schizophrenic. These are also NLA from Mercedes, but I have not found a donor to refurb. I think the motor is on the way out, 3. There is a VERY slight crack just beginning in the shift panel wood (see photo). I'm just afraid to send it out for fear I won't get it back. 4. There is small mark on the underside, just past the catalyst, that looks like it scrubbed something in the road at some point in its life. You probably would not find it if I didn't point it out to you.
This is one of the best examples of the W126 that I have seen in a long, long time. You may not be aware that they have begun the climb that the 123, 107, and now 129's are on. I have seen two cars internationally in the last 90 days, one nicer, one not as nice, that brought $29k (it was blue, which is certainly not as good as black), and one that was "no saled" at over 40k Euros. Given the time and care invested here, the price is very fair and within sanity. I have the books, manuals, pouch, and three keys. I also have the Mercedes Master inquiry, which shows the logical progression of the miles over the last 15 years or so. Note the pictures of her on the lawn at Amelia Cars and Coffee this year, where it was was trailered down for display.
I am a long time Mercedes geek, second generation, know right from wrong, and have been in business for 38 years. I play by the Golden Rule. I know the difference between a "car" and a fine automobile. I have a lien free GA title in hand, and I have no dealer add-ons either. (GA residents must pay appropriate tax and registration). I can help you with transport and transportation, and will do my best to make your experience fun and easy. I'm happy for you to talk to my tech, or a reputable inspection with my approval. I have deep references that you are welcome to check out. Please take a look on my Ebay comments and note the feedback is 100%.
Remember how 107's, 129's and 123's used to be available for nothing? Don't miss out again on one of the finest cars to ever come from Unterturkheim. I will do my best to answer all your questions or get photos you may need. Thanks, I hope that someone will find a proper home for this beautiful example.
