Description:

1958 Mercedes-Benz 200-Series

THIS MERCEDES-BENZ TYPE 220S WAS PURCHASED FEBRUARY 19, 1958 AT BOYETTE MOTOR COMPANY IN OAKLAND CALIFORNIA BY MR. HAROLD GLEN SMITH. IT HAS SPENT IT'S ENTIRE LIFE IN CALIFORNIA'S SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA, AND WAS CAREFULLY TRANSPORTED TO WASHINGTON, DC, SIX MONTHS AGO WHERE IT HAS REMAINED IN DRY HEATED STORAGE. IT HAS DOCUMENTATION GOING BACK TO THE DATE THE DATE OF PURCHASE FROM THE DEALERSHIP AND HAS MAINTENANCE RECORDS SHOWING ITS SUBSEQUENT OWNERS, ONE OF WHOM OWNED THE VEHICLE FOR OVER 32 YEARS.
IT WAS ORDERED WITH DB040 BLACK PAINT, RED LEATHER, OPTIONAL AUTOMATIC CLUTCH AND VERY RARE OPTIONAL WEBASTO SLIDING/FOLDING ROOF. THE SLIDING ROOF IS HUGE AND WHEN FULLY OPEN THE CAR FEEL LIKE A CONVERTIBLE. VERY FEW WITH THE ROOF IN THIS MODEL, ESPECIALLY IN THIS CONDITION.
EXTERIOR:
THE CAR IS AN EXTREMELY SOLID WEST-COAST CAR WITH RUST-FREE FENDERS, DOORS, BODY, UNDERCARRIAGE, JACK POINTS AND FRAME. SOME OF THE INNER PANELS EVEN SHOW ORIGINAL HAND-WRITTEN FACTORY MARKINGS. THE FIT AND GAPS OF THE DOORS AND FENDERS LOOK TO BE FACTORY. THE DOORS OPEN AND CLOSE EASILY, THE WAY THEY SHOULD. THE CHROME AND ALUMINUM TRIM ARE EXCELLENT, ALTHOUGH SOME PITTING ON THE REAR BUMPER AND A FEW DENTS ON THE BACK BUMPER AND THE FRONT LEFT BUMPER. THE HUBCAPS ARE WORN AND SHOULD BE REPLACED. ONE CHROME STRIP OVER THE RIGHT REAR FENDER IS WORN. GIVEN THE AGE OF THE PAINT, IT IS IN GOOD CONDITION BUT CLOSE-UP THERE ARE MANY SMALL SPOTS AND BLEMISHES, BUT LOOKS VERY, VERY GOOD AND SHINY A FOOT AWAY. THERE IS A CREASE ON THE LOWER RIGHT FENDER. IF THE PAINT WERE PROFESSIONALLY ADDRESSED (BUFFED) IT WOULD PROBABLY IMPROVE SEVERAL LEVELS, HOWEVER, THIS VEHICLE WOULD BE AN EASY SHOW-CAR WITH THE RIGHT PAINT AND COSMETICS. THERE ARE SEVERAL SMALL DINGS HERE AND THERE, NOTHING MAJOR, BUT OVERALL, EXTREMELY CLEAN FOR AN UNRESTORED CAR.
INTERIOR:THE SEATS ARE IN OVERALL GOOD CONDITION, THE BACK SEAT AND ALL DOOR PANELS ARE EXCELLENT. THE FRONT SEATS SHOW NORMAL WEAR AND CREASES FOR LEATHER THIS OLD AND THERE IS A SEPARATION ON THE LOWER DRIVERS SEAT THAT NEEDS TO BE SEWN BACK. THE LEATHER FEELS SMOOTH AND SOFT. THE CARPETING HAS BEEN PROFESSIONALLY REPLACED AND LOOKS BEAUTIFUL. IT IS THE THE SAME STYLE AND CORRECT COLOR CARPET THAT IS IN THE 220S COUPE/CABRIOLET, INSTEAD OF THE STANDARD RUBBER MATS IN THE SEDANS. THE WOOD AROUND THE WINDOWS AND LOWER DASHBOARD HAS IT'S FACTORY FINISH. THE TOP OF THE DASHBOARD HAS TWO CRACKS AND DISCOLORATION. THE HEADLINER LOOKS VERY NICE, NO RIPS OR STAINS. THERE IS A SMALL CHIP IN THE WINDSHIELD.
ROOF:THE MATERIAL ON THE TOP OF THE CAR IS OLD AND FADED AND THERE IS A SQUARE PATCH ON THE RIGHT REAR SIDE. THE SUNROOF LOOKS LIKE IT HAS NOT BEEN COMPLETELY OPENED FOR A VERY LONG TIME. I DID OPEN IT ABOUT A 12-INCHES BUT DID NOT WANT TO FORCE OR BREAK ANYTHING. IT CLOSES NICE AND TIGHT.
MECHANICAL:ODOMETER SHOWS 56,073, MOST LIKELY 156,073. ACCORDING TO THE RECORDS, THE ENGINE WAS REBUILT MANY YEARS AGO AND IT FEELS VERY STRONG. I DO NOT SEE ANY SMOKE OR EVIDENCE OF OIL-BURNING. LAST YEAR THE CARBURETORS WERE ALSO REBUILT WITH NEW PARTS. THEY NEED TO BE ADJUSTED AND SYNCHRONIZED WITH THE CHOKE TO REALLY WORK CORRECTLY. NEW HOSES AND RADIATOR FLUSH AS WELL. THE CAR DOES NOT OVERHEAT AND TEMPERATURE GAGE STAYS WHERE IT SHOULD. THE PREVIOUS OWNER ADDED AN ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP WHICH WORKS BUT SEEMS A BIT NOISY (I WOULD CHANGE IT BACK TO THE ORIGINAL MECHANICAL). THE VEHICLE DRIVES WELL AND AUTOMATIC CLUTCH SHIFTS PERFECTLY. IT IS A SIMPLE HYDRAULIC CLUTCH THAT USES VACUUM-PRESSURE TO DISENGAGE THE CLUTCH WHENEVER THE DRIVER DECIDES TO SHIFT. FUN TO DRIVE! BRAKES SHOES AND CORRESPONDING PARTS HAVE BEEN REPLACED, ETC, BUT THERE APPEARS TO BE SOME AIR IN THE SYSTEM SO THEY WILL NEED TO BE BLED. EVEN THE ORIGINAL HEATER BOXES ARE PRESENT AND HAVE BEEN PRESERVED (THESE USUALLY DISINTEGRATE DUE TO AGE AND MOISTURE).DUE TO WINTER CHEMICALS ON THE STREETS, IT HAS NOT LEFT THE GARAGE SINCE DECEMBER SO I AM UNABLE TO SHOW A VIDEO OF THE CAR DRIVING BUT IT DRIVES WELL.
OVERALL, THE CAR IS BEAUTIFUL. THE RESERVE PRICE HAS BEEN SET FAIRLY. EASY SHOW-POTENTIAL FOR THIS VEHICLE, WITH THE RIGHT COSMETICS, NEW TOP AND RE-DYING OF THE LEATHER. YOU WILL WIN AWARDS. THE BODY IS SO SOLID AND VERY ORIGINAL. IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND LIKE THIS.
VEHICLE IS SOLD IN "AS-IS" CONDITION WITH NO WARRANTIES. $1,500 DUE AT CLOSE OF AUCTION AND BALANCE WITHIN 5 DAYS.THANKS AND HAPPY BIDDING!!!
. THANKS!!!
