Very Clean well-maintained 123-chassis Turbodiesel Coupe
1985 Mercedes-Benz 300-Series 300CD-T
1985 Mercedes-Benz 300CD Turbodiesel Coupe - VIN WDBAB53A2FA256044
For your consideration is my remarkably clean 1985 123-chassis Mercedes-Benz 300CD-T Coupe - one of just 8,007 produced from 1981-1985, only 1,291 of which were the more desirable 1985 models with more favorable gearing on top of being the last model year they were offered.
Wearing just over 141,500 miles (just over 4,200/year average), this car has been our family weekend cruiser. This is not a desperation or fire sale, and I am not looking to flush the car for a lowball offer.I have 2 factory master keys, one aftermarket key, factory books and manuals and recent service history. While not a #1 concours car, this is definitely a car you can be proud to show but not afraid to drive.
Among the key major service items on these cars are valve adjustments and oil changes, both of which were recently completed. Also recent are suspension rebuild, oil seal replacement, shifter bushings, and new OEM front brakes and rotors. I also replaced the original 14" wheels with factory "bundt" style 15" wheels with new Michelin Premier A/S tires in the last 300 miles.
On the inside, this car is in very nice original condition. The palomino feintuft velour carpet is in excellent condition, and the car comes with 2 sets of floormats: high-quality Coco Mats and OEM carpet mats. The leather seats (yes, leather, NOT MB-Tex!) are crack and rip free showing only the slightest patina of age - the driver's seat bottom spring was just rebuilt. The dash has just the faintest beginnings of a tiny crack near the speaker on the passenger side - a common occurrence on these cars. The wood is very nice and crack free. The headliner is gorgeous. There are no foul odors - there doesn't appear to have ever been any smoking or leaks inside. The air conditioning, power windows, cruise control, sunroof, and power locks all work properly, and the car is current on the stringent Virginia safety inspection. The aftermarket Alpine stereo turns on and off properly, and the power antenna goes up and down as it should (although it only extends about ¾ of the way).
Outside, the car is remarkably straight. The car reportedly had a left-side accident at some point, but the paint is consistent in quality and finish throughout. The doors, hood, and trunk all shut with the appropriate thunk. All of the lenses are in very good, clear condition. There is an unused OEM spare tire in the trunk along with a complete tool kit still in its plastic wrapper and jack. Glass is all original. The car has OEM Bosch European headlights and not cheap aftermarket units, and it even has the European trunk-mounted warning triangle.
The motor starts easily and settles to a very smooth idle. The power steering functions properly, and the 4-speed automatic transmission shifts very smoothly with no clunks or flares. There are no odd noises or whines from the driveline. The car pulls like a freight train and achieves super-legal speeds with no problem, while still achieving over 35mpg on the road.
The car has had three prior owners and I am the 4th: (1) 1985-1988; (2) 1988-2015 (!); (3) 2015-2018. The owner before me advised that he put about 17K miles on the car. The clock keeps perfect time and the tachometer works great. Odo/speedo also work properly. The vacuum system seems to work great - the locks do their thing, the A/C pods work, the transmission shifts properly, and the car shuts off when you turn the key.The car is equipped with a block heater and the MB first aid kit.I have a set of the special Hazet valve adjustment wrenches which will convey if the buyer wants them. If not I will gladly keep them for my *next* one.
The PO sold the car because he was closing on a house and needed the money. I am selling it for similar reasons - we had a new driveway and some work done, and since this is a fifth car for 3 drivers I decided to see about freeing-up capital. Simple as that. I'd have no problem keeping it indefinitely. As a regular contributor for Mercedes Enthusiast Magazine, I have covered this car in one running report already (pictured), and it will appear to some extent in 2 others if it sells. More if it doesn't.
