Description:

1986 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class

This roadster has very glossy original paint with the original pinstriping still in place. The original chrome alloy upgrade wheels are in great shape and the tiresare all balanced andhaveno sign of tread wear. The seats have been recovered and are in great condition, no wear. The carpet is original, not worn and in very good condition. The original dash pad is cracked, a custom full cap is in place now and looks great. Door panels are in great condition. Power windows work perfectly, power door lock system also works perfectly including the trunk switch. Soft top is in excellent condition, not faded.

The car starts up quickly every time. It runs unbelievably smooth and strong. It accelerates just as it should and makes no weird noises. I would not hesitate to drive this car across the country as it is. Put it in cruise control and it glides down the freeway effortlessly and surprisingly quiet. It never, ever overheats, even on the hottest of Houston days. All of the front end rubber has been replaced including the front sub-frame mounts, so it's very comfortable and quiet. The transmission shifts just as it should, very smooth and comfortable. Exhaust system is all new, cat, resonator, muffler and piping. This car is a head turner and an absolute joy to drive. We also have a convertible 1968 big block Corvette, and every time we drive this Mercedes we are impressed with the comfort and ease of driving all over again. Unfortunately, it's time to cut them both loose.

Will add more interior and engine bay photos on Friday.

Some things need attention:
  • The hard top is in need of a re-spray and some cleanup, it satin storage for years.I actually can't imagine ever using the hard top, so this seems like a waste of resources.
  • The air conditioner needs work. The control unit has already been replaced, and we know the compressor works. But air will not come out of the center vents and it's not cold.
  • The trunk has a very small bump on it, like there may have been something inside that the lid was closed on. This is a simple but not cheap fix as it would require a re-spray of the trunk lid.
  • The hood has a spot about the size of a quarter that looks like someone burned through the paint with a buffer. The hood could use a re-spray to fix this. This is visible in the fourth photo.
  • The console woodgrain clear coat was cracking, we covered it with woodgrain vinyl wrap, this should probably come off and be repaired properly.
  • The original radio has been replaced with a modern Bluetooth mp3 player.
