The Story of this 560 SL
My name is Al Rivera, I am a broker. I was hired by Betty, the owner of this 560 S, to sell it for her. We felt that ebay would be a good place to show the car and it's features. I have gathered as much information as possible to be able to present and describe this car to the best of my ability.
I have taken pictures of the 560 SL with my digital camera. All the pictures you see in this auction are from my camera. None of the pictures have been re touched, photo-chopped or manipulated.
Not always, but once in awhile, you do get to see a "love story," about a marriage, and a car that was a very big part of it, this is just one of those.
Harold H. "Captain Pete" Peterson, was a lifelong resident of Southern California. He was a Captain of several ships that carried oil along the Pacific Coast, from Alaska to Mexico. He was a trial skipper for Todd Shipyards in the later years. Also was a port pilot for the US Navy. Betty was the love of his life. He always made sure that she was taken care of, and nothing was more important in his life.
He wanted nothing but the best for her. He got her this 560 SL, because it was a safe car and it had air bags. On Betty's birthday and on the same day her first grandchild was born, Captain Pete gave Betty this beautiful car. It was one of the most memorable days of her life.
The 560 SL was always taken care of, in every way. All services done to the car were kept up monthly. She kept it in the garage and had it covered. It was never driven in bad weather. Often times they would take trips in their little car and it was a part of their lives for so many years.
The original silver paint glows as new today as it was still new. The beautiful burgundy leather interior still in beautiful condition. Even the Beryl wood accents have no cracks. Everything works. It drives just wonderful. It only has 69,515 original miles. She did point out that she dropped by accident her cosmetic pouch on the rear trunk lid and put a small chip in the middle of the lid. It broke her heart, but did not want to get it fixed, she wanted to keep the car original. She lost her beloved husband in 2010. She has kept the car in the garage close to her as a reminder of her husbands love.
She also made note, that she never took off the hard top of the car. What lies underneath is the original factory black cloth convertible top that came with the car in 1986. It has been tucked away all these years.
She told me that it was time to move. She found a wonderful senior living home in New Mexico and she said it was time to sell her home and sell the 560 SL. It was a hard decision, but felt it was time. She proudly presents this car to you for sale for the first time, since it came off the showroom floor in 1986.
All maintenance is up to date. Tires and brakes are in good working order. Suspension and body look good.Nothing major has been noted. Drives and handles just like a Mercedes should. If you are looking for a classic, and one that has been lovingly taken care of, then, maybe this is the one to take a look at. Some interesting Notes
The little SL series was produced by Mercedes Benz and manufactured in Germany. The years from 1985 to the end of 1989. Mercedes Benz had produced about 49,347 SL's during that period. Seems like a very low figure. It was noted that these cars took longer to build, since, handcrafted cars were still in production at this time.New for 1985 was the 5.6 liter V-8 engine, and a more beefed up front suspension made the SL an attractive buy, especially driving on those country roads. Sounds like a well thought out sports car to me.
