Description:
1987 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class SL
If you have been searching ebay high and low for the perfect SL to drive for the summer, consider this car! There is so much that goes into buying a R107 that people generally do not think about. I think before I go into the particulars about this SL, I'd like to take the time to give some of the less experienced buyers a little bit of what I've picked up in 20 years of R107 collecting and trading. First of all year, while all 560's are valuable, consider about a 10% decrease in a 1986 model year. I think the consensus is that because it is a first year car they are worth less money. A false statement, insofar as I see nothing wrong with owning a 86 vs later year SL. The 87-88's generally are equally priced. Not a first year car, not a final year car. The 1989's tend to bring abouta 5% premium over a identical 87 or 88. Again, likely because it is the final year car.Next, we talk about colors. This is a huge deal in SL's generally, Signal Red over Black or Palomino bring the most value. Next will be the Black and Diamond Blue, then Anthracite and Medium Gray...and down the line.
Mileage is important, but candidly not as important as you may think. Sure, a 20k mile car is worth more than a 100k mile car. However, a car that has been neglected or suffers from deferred maintenance and preventative maintenance will suffer. I like to see linear maintenance history without big lulls in history. Equally important, any 560 you buy MUST have the timing chain and timing chain rails replaced, regardless of mileage. These plastic parts fail and you'll have a fine running engine and in a split second, you will own a very expensive paper weight. Motor mounts and subframe mounts should have been replaced regardless of mileage. If not, a $5,000 deduction should be made from the purchase price.
Do not bother with cars with no service history. It is akin to marrying a woman you met yesterday. I'm not a fan of dealing with people or things I know nothing about. Carfax and Autocheck should be spotless as well.
A car with accident history or paintwork? Forget it! Don't waste your time or hard earned money.
With that being said. Let me tell you about my 560 I have to offer.
a 1987 560SL finished in its' original coat of Signal Red paint in fantastic shape. 4 mils paint thickness acros the board. Absolutely no paint work, no clear coat issues of any kind, ect.
Interior wise, no dash cracks, bolster wear, carpet wear, ect. The seats are very plush and look and feel new albeit they are 30 years old. Dash veneers and console veneers are crack and fade free, which is actually pretty rare.
All the glass is original and in great shape. Chrome and stainless are both scratch and dent free. The soft top is perfect as well as the hard top. The hard top comes with the aluminum carrier.
The original Becker Grand Prix stereo has been rebuilt and works great. Everything works in this car including the clock, antenna, air conditioning, ect. Every dash and console bulb, everything has been attended to.
The tires are new Michelins ($1000) last year as well as the timing chain and rails were replaced at the dealer. The motor mounts and subframe mounts were also replaced at that time, and documented as well. The car has all service history dating back to 1987. Excellent and linear service history and my inquest of the records show absolutely no deferred maintenance on the car, always open checkbook.
So, after that long dissertation on 560's and hopefully a clear and transparent description, you can appreciate this car for its' far above par condition, as well as the excellent and open checkbook care it received.
For you exporters out there, this is a 3/87 build date car. This means no taxes!
