This is a very original and good example 1991 Mercedes Benz 300TE luxury sport wagon. I love this car. How cool is it to have a euro-style vehicle that can accommodate 7 people without being a a minivan?!
In 1991 the original price was $57,000 for this car and it shows. It is built to the old, super high mercedes standard. It feels totally solid, drives like a much newer car and has loads of up to date luxury features for a vehicle of its age.
We bought it in 2013 and were the third owners (we bought it from a dealer where the second owner traded it in) and it had 94k gently driven, dealer maintained & garage kept miles.
Since then it has lived literally 75% of its life sitting in our garage doing nothing because we only used it in the summer. It now has under 106,300 miles on the clock. That would be even lower except that we took it on a road trip to PA and back once, accounting for 1100 miles.
Specifications:
The exterior is Silver Metallic with Saffron MB TEX interior.
This W124 features the incredibly reliable 3.0L 6 capable of 177hp and is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. Quick on its feet.
Previous owner installed a newer Pioneer stereo which plays mp3 cds, regular cds and has input for mp3 players phones etc. Please note on the sound system I think there is something funny going on with the speakers or speaker balance? Either that or I am not using the settings correctly. Best to expect some dodgy speakers then you won't be disappointed.
The interior of the vehicle is appointed with dual power front seats and driver 2-position memory option. The rear seat passengers get plenty of leg and head room.
The handy third row rear facing seat (yes!!!) folds out for convenient 7-passenger seating and then folds flat when not in use for great cargo space.
Factory original roof rack.
The inside is looking extremely neat and tidy for its age. Those MB TEX seats age insanely well, basically wrinkle free and with perfectly intact split-free headrests etc. A NON-SMOKER vehicle. There are a few stains in the main carpets + cargo area/rumble seating and there is slight sun-fade in areas but not extreme. There are no cracks in the dash. Some crazing/lines on the wood varnish coating near the shift - see photos.
A leather trimmed adjustable steering wheel has controls including cruise control.
Power slide & tilt moonroof, 4 wheel ABS, fog lamps, 15” factory alloy wheels and factory alarm system.
There is a full size spare in the cargo area with good tread.
2 master keys and a complete set of books included with the car.
CarFax certified with NO accidents, no odometer or title discrepancies and owned in sunny California and a short time in Virginia before we bought it from a dealer and registered it in NC for summer use (it stayed at our vacation home). Looking at the body it probably has never seen snow.
Photos try to show the most obvious cosmetic issues but they are hard to make visible. A very very subtle shallow dent on the driver side of the hood that you have to try quite hard to see, there is the remnant of a bumper sticker on the tailgate, a couple minor dents on the 2 right doors, nick on back of a mirror, repaired crack on lower plastic valance under front bumper far left side Basically the paint is in quite good condition for a car of this age/mileage but obviously not flawless. The good news is it has Mercedes quality factory original paint from the Mercedes golden age of quality. Alloys have some curbing - I photographed each one to try and show.
The previous owner installed the upgraded Euro-style headlights.
AC blows cold. Windows, sunroof and door locks all work.
Any bad bits I haven't mentioned? The antenna is totally functional but a bit noisy when it goes up. Suspension feels bouncy if you sit in back. Some cracked plastic on rumble seat, by the rear hatch door latch and around the rear light (see photo). It has the funky mono-wiper which some people love but I'm not a huge fan of. The driver's side door pocket has the vinyl not tight on edge (you can see it in photo - ridiculously minor issue in an otherwise great interior).oil pressure light has flickered on and off before, mechanic said no issue.
Just before we bought the car in 2013 the dealer told us they did the following. This is copied and pasted from their original sales PDF - it was not done by us so I can’t guarantee this (I say this because they mislead me on one point: I had to replace the AC blower as soon as I got it even though they sold me the car saying AC was "ice cold on all speeds"). The dealer had a 100% satisfaction rating.
  • Mobil 1 Synthetic oil + filter change
  • Replaced the Valve Cover Gasket
  • Replaced the Driveshaft Flex Joint
  • Installed new Bosch Spark Plugs
  • Installed a new Transmission Mount
  • Replaced the Centerbar link
  • Replaced the EHA Valve
  • Replaced (1) of the A/C Vacuum Actuators
  • Installed new Fuel & Engine Air Filters
  • Replaced Fuel Level Sender
  • Replaced the Radio Antenna Mast
  • Installed New Wiper Blades
  • Replaced the Hood Emblem

In our 3 years of ownership we did the following aside from regular servicing, state inspection and oil changes etc
  • Recharged the AC
  • Replaced the AC blower motor with full mercedes parts - this alone cost $600
  • Replaced brake pads all around
  • Replaced thermostat control for fan
  • New track rod end drivers side front
  • New top of the range battery about a month ago

This is a sweet car coming into collectability, particularly with the older TD now commanding inaccessibly high prices and getting OLD. This one is still ultra modern to drive and maintain. It's a perfect future classic for someone who wants an original 300TE to keep for the long term. These cars are sought after and it's hard to find well preserved examples available.
Visits and test drives welcome! Please inspect! We are happy for any potential buyer to assure themselves of the condition and functionality of the vehicle prior to buying it. Also happy to do live skype/facetime walk around to show you anything you want to see.
This is a 25 year old car and as private sellers we obviously can't provide a warranty.
We can cooperate with shipping arrangements.
No reserve except that low starting price - someone's going to get a lot of car for the money!
NB on first day of listing the title said "4matic" as I thought that meant it was the 4 speed automatic but I have since learned the term refers to something else so I have since replaced it with term "automatic" - this car is RWD. Thanks to the ebayer who helped me out on that!
