This is an early-production 300SE L 6.3 sedan with US DOT export spec.s and no sunroof. It was taken as a partial trade from the 2nd owner for a newer Mercedes in August 2002.
Theseembedded pictures below are from a local car show just before storage....
It was tuned and partially restored between 2002 and 2006. It had the Macassar Ebony woods on the doors refinished, a new dashbow from Heritage Woodworks, and a refinish on the glovebox and ashtray. A brand-new gas tank, a water pump, distributor cap, rotor, points, and plugs from Star Motors were installed. New plug wires and filters. RIAL "bundt" style rims and Michelin MXV tires were added. The settings on the injection pump were corrected and the choke thermostat was disassembled and lubed with silicone grease.
At the time the car was parked, only 123 miles had been added since Aug 2002 and the car started, idled, accelerated, shifted, handled, and braked perfectly. The engine ran smooth and strong with no unusual noises. However, esp. under heavy acceleration, the transmission released a strong mist of ATF under the rear of the car. It was intended that the car should be stored for a while and then sent to NY to Star Motors for transmission service. Owing to multiple other priorities, that never happened and the car wound up stored for 10 years in the 14x18' concrete floored aluminum-clad wooden barn that it was driven into and parked under its own power.
The paint is a respray and is showing its age - lots of scratches etc. The bodyis straight and complete although there is rust along the underside of the rockers and jack-tubes - though no holes in floorboards or anything that severe.
This early 6.3 is very complete and original.
Though it is Titled /registered as a 1969, the #1181 VIN number makes it a rare 1968 model production.
It has the potential to restore to be a very valuable classic.
The barn is set back 100 feet from a gravel driveway or about 40 feet from a fence to an adjacent open-access property across a wooded lot. Please examine the diagram belowbefore placing your bid.
The total distance from the paved road is 170 feet. (It is not a straight shot.)
(See Diagram.)
Thefuel system needs a complete flush, the battery is dead, and the suspension is deflated, so the engine has not and can not be started on-site for a demonstration or to assist wit extraction or loading..
There are two potential extraction routes. Neither are direct in-line for a tow-cable from a remotely located truck. Come-along's, winch or pulleys that can attach to big tree trunks or a Jeep wouldmost likely be required. There isn't enough clearance to pull a tow truck or transport directly up to the shed - only a car will make the required turns in the space available.
The professional opinion is that the car can be extracted with the deflated suspension. It should then be possible to raise the car enough to insert blocks in the suspension or place the car on tow-dollies. Theair suspension had been inflated by an external tire inflator during it's time of storage, buta recent attempt gave evidence of air leaking from somewhere nearor at the rear axle, soit will not likely simply inflate from anairtankto roll out - it will need to be pulled free in the lowered state.
Route "A" requires a 90° turn immediately outside of the barn to align the car to face the adjacent field. Then the car could be winched the remaining distance to a waiting truck - approx. 45 feet through an opening I can make in the fence. However, the lot is not my property and the ground will need to be judged hard enough not to leave ruts from the truck at the time of collection.
Route "B" is entirely on my own property. The car will have to be able to make a 45° turn to pass between 2x pine tree trunks about 65 feet from the barn with a 9ft space between them to line up with the driveway. It will then be about a 100ft straight shot to the road.
