In the early 1970s, Mercedes-Benz built the 300SEL 6.3, what many people believe was the finest sedan in the world. In appearance, it says Mercedes and nothing else. The styling is conservative, the wheel covers are simple and haven’t been over-styled. Inside, it’s luxurious but not excessive. The upholstery is genuine leather, the paneling on the dashboard is genuine wood, and the carpet is high quality. The air conditioning is neatly integrated into the dash with the solid workmanship that one would expect. There are several very nice touches that set it aside from its competition. With it's three way adjustable seats, practically any driver can feel at home behind the wheel. Handling is excellent by any standards; with it's air assisted suspension, commendably quick steering, and power assisted brakes, the driver easily feels in control at all times. The 300SEL 6.3 would easily out maneuver most sports cars in its day. On rough roads, the 6.3 is simply miles and years ahead of anything built in the U.S. and most of Europe during that period.
