Description:

1993 Mazda RX-7

This car is stock with some reliability improvements including a cat back, larger aluminum radiator, and a metal reserve water pressure tank. The goal was to keep it stock to prevent the slippery slope to higher horsepower at the cost of risk to the apex seals.
The first owner hit a utility pole in September of 1995 in Ohio with about 21,000 miles. The second owner, a Texan, bought the car in January of 1996 as a junk with a salvage title and had the front end damage repaired. The car's title with about 23,000 miles was registered in San Antonio in May of 1996, then moved to Saint Charles, VA where it lived until November of 1999 with about 36,000 miles at that point. It was sold to someone in Kentucky who put a lot of miles on it and blew an apex seal. The someone, probably a guy, didn't care that the car was running very rich, loud, and burned a hole in the muffler. (I witnessed a pair of ear plugs hung over the rear view mirror when I received possession.) The car caught on fire from the muffler hole gasses passing through the radio antenna hole into the back right corner of the interior around spring of 2001. But at least the damage was limited to the back right side/end (See the picture). The driver must have pulled over fairly quickly after being engulfed in smoke and someone put the fire out with a fire extinguisher.
I bought the car from an intermediate buyer with a Kentucky salvage title who thought he could repair the damage, but gave up and put it on the market. It was received by me in November of 2001 in Santa Fe, NM with about 61,000 miles on the odometer. I spent the next 7 months overhauling the car including a rebuilt engine by Bruce Turrantine of Raleigh, NC. (A source for Wankel motors for experimental aircraft.)
I have had a lot of fun with the car including local auto cross and some touring over the last 21 years in Santa Fe. I have had some specialty work done on the car by others, but the usual wrenching was done by me including the motor replacement. Everything works. The 5th gear syncro is a little iffy. The car was repainted in 2017 factory Montego Blue and is garaged. I have used Castrol 10-40 oil and put some 2-cycle motor oil in the gas tank at every fill-up - which helps to keep the apex seals in good health according to Bruce.
I am not saying this is my last sports car, but at 85 it should go to some one who can enjoy the ride.
