1966 Lotus Cortina

I got the call from a realtor friend that there was a property being cleared of cars and trucks. They had told me it was some type of Datsun and then they clarified that it was in fact a Cortina. You can imagine how my partner and I looked at each other when we pulled back the blue tarp.
Soon we would return and buy a cherry red Honda 750/4, a cool black Cadillac, a truck trailer and the Lotus. When we got in the garage we would see an astonishing sight. Typewriters! Dozens and dozens of typewriters. They were stacked on metal shelves 8 feet high. Beautiful ornate ones with pearlescent plastic, drab black business ones, wooden ones, you name it. Then when we queried about all these typing machines it came out that we were at the famous typewriter mans garage!
Typewriter man was a legend in Berkeley that kept a tidy shop on San Pablo Ave. He was friendly and polite and knowledgeable and dressed impeccably in a suit every time he was in his shop. They even made a movie about Typewriter Man as the computerized age all but obliterated his small business. His shop stayed open with the writers and authors that kept creating material by plucking away at the typewriters they loved and he was their last resource for repairs.

The car sat between two large apartment buildings and behind a large Chevy Blazer. Even friends I know that have lived in the neighborhood their whole lives had no idea the car was there. The body is beautiful on this Cortina and the new owner will be ecstatic. There is no rust in the floor or quarter panels. The man had planned an engine swap and had a mocked up engine with no internals sitting in the garage. His plan was to use a Cologne 6. He never got the project on the road and it had been stalled, according to family members, since he began the swap in 1979. There are some modifications he made to the transmission tunnel that will need to be undone. Rus & I have found thousands of cars over the years and this little Lotus is in the top 10.
We have acquired an Elan engine topped with a Stromberg head and carbs. We also found a Cortina 4-speed transmission that is included in the sale should the buyer want it, which we hope you do. We can advise on shipping possibilities. The title is in my name.
