Description:

1961 Lincoln Continental

The Fourth-Generation 1961 Lincoln Continental Convertibleswere produced with a chassis that rode on a stretched version of the unibodyplatform produced for the 1961 Thunderbird. In what would be the first four-door convertible from a major Americanmanufacturer after World War II, the Lincoln Continental convertible was fittedwith a power-operated canopy top and the only engine available was the 430 cuin (7.0 L) MEL V8 carried over from the Mark V.

The Lincoln Continental became an icon of 1960s style andenjoyed a successful run from 1961 through 1969, with over 360,000 units soldin total and in 1961 only 2,857 convertible-style Lincoln Continentals wereproduced, making the vehicle quite rare today. The 1961 model year was also the first yearfor the center-opening rear doors, to later become known as the 'suicidedoors.'

As expected with luxury cars of this era, the list ofstandard equipment was impressive: power windows, power door locks, transistorized AM radio, power steering, power brakes, and seat paddingproclaimed to “provide almost three times the amount of cushioning used onother fine cars.”

The vehicle specs are: Engine: 430ci V8; Transmission: Automatic; Drive Type: Rear Wheel Drive (RWD); Originality: Original & Highly Original; Model Generation: 4th Gen; Vehicle Type: Automobile; Body Style: Convertible; Doors: 4 Doors; Driver Side: Left Hand Drive.

The original miles on this car are 94,387. My father bought the Lincoln Continental convertible in the early 1980s and had it in New Mexico until 2000 when he moved to the Prescott, Arizona area and to date it has been in southwestern dry climates. The vehicle most likely had high mileage when he bought it because I do not think that he drove the car more than, at the most, 20,000 miles while he owned it. 2017 was the last year he drove the car and since that time the engine has not been restarted. He did have some work done on the Lincoln several years ago, but I do not have any of the receipts.

General condition of the exterior includes a dint in the middle of the front bumper; a small dent in the trunk/hood; paint blemishes, scratches and some chipping; the back seat has some missing upholstery and the upper part above the back seat is quite faded. The chrome script lettering of 'continental' is missing on the back left side panel; the right (red) back light cover is missing and there is slight damage skin of the car underneath the tail light area. Should find red light cover or anything belonging to the vehicle, I will forward it to the buyer.

Conditions of the working mechanics of the vehicle: Unknown.

The convertible top was damaged due to becoming unlatched from the securing mechanisms on the car.The metal frame appears to be intact with no obvious signs of major damage, however the soft cover material used in the construction of the top will need to be completely replaced. There is a small buckle in the metal at opening of the trunk/convertible compartment, behind the back seat and it is not known if this was a result of the convertible top incident. We have not connected a battery to the car in order to open the convertible top compartment because the wiring and connections throughout the vehicle are unknown and it would be something for a person with knowledge of this type of mechanism to work with on it.

Additional information:The left front driver’s side window is down and is believed to not be working properly at this time. There are a few additional parts from the vehicle including a crank which might be part of the mechanism for the driver's window; the original radio is still intact but was taken out of the car and replaced with a Sony radio/cassette player; and four hub caps in good condition. Three of the tires hold air for a few days, but the front right passenger wheel is completely flat.

The vehicle is being sold AS IS and the title is clear.
