1956 Lincoln Continental Continental Mark II

1956 Lincoln Continental Mark II Black/Red Rare Factory Air Conditioning

I am very pleased to present this 1956 Lincoln Continental Mark II with very rare factory air condtioning. This great mark II is in excellent cosmetic and mechanical condition and also rides like a dream. The odometer reads 42,5XX miles and it is believed to be correct. Stunning in it’s color combination of black exterior with red vinyl interior.

This car has strong paint and lines, strong interior, runs great etc. There are minor cosmetic flaws as you’d expect from a car of this age that has not been completely restored. Very presentable and a car that you’d be proud to own at a market correct price.

I’ve recently added many underside pictures to fully disclose the condition of the bottom of this car. There is some surface rust and some areas that have gone beyond surface but there are no structural issues. The car drives straight and fine. Any questions or doubts, please arrange to come and inspect the car or hire an inspector.

VIN # is C56B2224 and VIN plate data is:

01-1F6M-1230-6

Style 11-60a

Some history according to the owner:

I have owned for 8 years and bought from a Lincoln collector in Florida who had quite a few of these cars. He had owned it for a few years. Prior to that, it was in a Lincoln collection for a Chicago politician who owned the car for 20-30 years plus. The car was sold when he passed away. The car is highly original and has been pampered and taken care by all owners in climate controlled garages and well maintained. Everything works well on the car with an upgraded air conditioner compressor and a high capacity alternator to insure cool air at low rpm.

According to Wikipedia:

Today, approximately half of the cars still exist, about 1500 or so, in varying states of repair. There’s an active owner’s club, the Continental Mark II Association, and most parts required to keep them going are available, helped by the car’s using standard Lincoln mechanical components. Prices range between around $8000 for a running example in poor repair to around $70,000 in concours condition — thus, a car in perfect condition costs now, adjusted for inflation, about the same as the new one did in 1955, the only known exception being the aforementioned Mark II owned by Elvis Presley which, in 1999, sold for US$250,000 at a charity auction organized by Elvis Presley Enterprises and held at the Grand Hotel, in Las Vegas.

1956 Mark II – A Brief History

The Continental Mark II was introduced in October, 1955 at the Paris Auto Show. It was offered in only one body style, a two-door hardtop coupe and was a virtually hand-assembled car with a price tag of $10,000. The Mark II was powered by a more or less factory blueprinted (the parts were hand selected from production runs) Lincoln V-8 engine with 368 cubic inches. Every luxury feature known in 1956 was available on this car. All were standard except air conditioning which was a factory option and the electric eye dimmer which was a dealer-installed option.

The Continental was priced way above the average luxury car. In 1956, you could buy a new Cadillac for around $4,000; a new Rolls Royce could be had for just over $10,000. The high price tag and lack of other body styles limited sales. The Mark II was carried over into 1957 with very few changes. Production was halted in May of 1957. In all, about 3,000 Mark IIs were produced.

Ford Motor Company has always been coy about what their expectations were for the Mark II. Obviously, they were disappointed in the low sales figures but we’ve never heard what they expected. Compared with other specialty American cars which were priced well above the normal Cadillac/Lincoln luxury market prices, the Mark II did pretty well. It sold better than the 1957-59 Eldorado Brougham which was priced at about $13,000.

Today the Mark II is revered as one of the best styled cars of the 1950s. Its good looks are timeless. It rides and drives with a grace and quietness not found in other cars of that era.
Famous 1956 Mark II Owner:

The Mark II was very exclusive not only because of its price but because it was to be offered only to ‘selected’ buyers. Presumably, this would weed out the riff-raff. There is no evidence that this selectivity was ever enforced; if you could come up with the money, you could buy the car. Famous (and infamous) Mark II owners included Nelson Rockefeller, Barry Goldwater, Frank Sinatra, Cecil B. DeMille, R.J. Reynolds, Bill Harrah, Elvis Presley and the Shah of Iran.
