1935 Lincoln “Insert” Camera CarAn Excellent Project Car with Hollywood History
Between the 1930s and 1950s, if studios needed a camera car for filming they contacted one of two people - “Whitey” Ellison or Eddie Fuller. Well-known camera car builder “Whitey” Ellison is believed to have converted this 1935 Lincoln Model K into an “insert” car before World War II. With only a few camera cars in existence during that time, this one most likely received a lot of use. It is believed to have been used in the majority of films made before 1942 and as recently as 1975 in “The Wild Party,” which starred Raquel Welch and James Coco.
Introduced in 1931 with a lengthy 145-inch wheelbase, the Lincoln Model K was the perfect foundation for a camera car conversion (or a limousine as FDR did with his custom 1939 Lincoln “Sunshine Special”). By 1935, the Model K’s body had been lowered and moved forward 9 inches so that the cab sat firmly between the axles. These adjustments along with softer front springs, new shock absorbers and a rear anti-sway torsion-bar stabilizer made a very stable and centered platform.
Unlike today, where studios can choose from a fleet of differently equipped vehicles for various camera shots, this Lincoln Camera Car needed to be ready for every type of shot. It has camera platforms on the front and back and could easily be equipped, once again, with a swinging 360 degree crane arm.
The camera car comes with several boxes of parts, as the previous owner appears to have started a restoration on it. The Lincoln's original engine (believed to be a V-12 which was standard on the Lincoln K-series starting in 1933) was replaced with a Mopar 413 cubic inch V-8. There is no Title for this vehicle, only a Bill of Sale.
